hi guys, my sil is coming for thanksgiving and she is jewish. This is the first big family gathering we have had since she joined the family. She will be here through the 2nd day of chanukkah and I would like to recognise it for her, but I have no idea how to. Any ideas on what to do, gifts, etc would be greatly appreciated! thanks, maggie

Ask her if she'd like to bring her menorah and share the lighting with your family. It's a beautiful story.

You may want to find out if she eats Kosher for those days. I know some Jewish people who do only for certain events. If so, it would be nice to provide food items that were as Kosher as possible. It wouldn't be strict, since I'm sure you only have one set of dishes and don't have any way for a rabbi to come bless your kitchen, but it would be a nice gesture.

I love the idea about her bringing a menorah and sharing the story. I'd like to be there for that. :)

actually, Kermit, you're thinking about Passover. I don't keep kosher year round, but for 8 days of Passover I observe.

serve potato latkes on friday night. we eat them with applesauce. it's also customary to eat them with sour cream, but only if you're not eating a meat meal.

it's a tradition to give Chanuka gelt --- money --- but you can satisfy that tradition with chocolate coins.

Play dreidel! It's a fun Hanukkah game with a spinning top and Hebrew letters. Your Jewish friend probably has some somewhere. I know I have them all over the place at home. I used to teach friends to play it all the time. I agree about the latkas- yum!
