How do I thicken gravy? :o I have flour that I can use....do I just take some of the runny gravy & mix it with some flour (how much to use?) & then toss it in the big pot or what?? Any gravy thickerer's out there??

Ok...DO NOT put flour directly in the gravy! Mix the flour with alittle water until completly smooth and then add to the gravy. Works everytime.

You can either use the flour and water (put it in something and mix it up well -- thinner than paste, but thicker than just the water) OR you can use corn starch and water (same thing -- mix up separately).

Then pour into the gravy while stirring and cooking a little. It should thicken right up. Dont' cook it too long, or it will get too thick!

Okay....are we talking 1 tablespoon or 1/2 cup of flour??

Momtoomootoo ~ how did you have time to respond to this thread when you've been so busily making me split a gut laughing on the "finish the sentence" thread??

I would start with about a tablespoon of flour and 1/2 cup of water then you could always add more if needed.

As far as having time, how the heck did you manage to make gravy? Can I send my kids over?

Lol! I feel like my grandmother -- she'd never measure anything, just throw it in.

Best estimate is about 2 tablespoons to about 1/3 cup water --

Momtoomootoo -- is that about right?

Hah -- you're too quick on the draw. We posted at the same time. Mishetta -- go with Mom's to begin with. As she said, you can always add more.

Okay, wish me luck....gonna try to thicken that gravy now!!

Momtoomootoo ~ sure, send the kids over! Make sure you tell them that I have runny gravy though ~ just in case the "thickening" plan doesn't work!

You can also sprinkle in some instant potato flakes to thicken your gravy.

Instant potato flakes.....hmmmm.... interesting! I'll have to keep that in mind, but I've never even bought those before!

The flour/water mixture worked really well ~ thanks all for the help!

simmer, stir and stir and stir. Slow big stirring. I'm the
gravy maker in our family. I do exactly what other posters
have said-mix flour and milk together first, then add it a tablespoon at a time stirring and stirring. It takes patience,
lots of patience.

Next time you are at the supermarket, buy "Wondra" flour. It is in a blue cylindrical shaped canister. Just keep pouring it into the drippings, a little at a time and stir till you it is the right consistency.

Just a quick tip - I always mix the flour and water by shaking it in one of the kids old sippy cups with my finger over the opening.

Since we almost always had potatoes with gravy, my mom taught me to use the potatoe water.
Put a colondar over the roasting pan of drippings and drain the potatoes into it. Will not take the whole pot of water. drain the rest of the pot into the sink as normal. This will give you boiling water for your gravy and add some starch picked up from the potatoes. Then using a separate cup mix some flour with some of the hot water now in the pan. gradually add the hot water until flour is smooth and then poor into the pan.

Yep...shake shake shake, DisyKat! Tupperware even used to have a tiny little thing just for that. A small tupperware cup with a tight fitting lid.

I was going to say instant mashed potatoes too. I make homemade potatoes, but if they get too runny I will add some instant potatoes. I also use them when I need to thicken a cream based soup. I don't like to eat instant mashed potatoes, but they are a great kitchen saver.
