I went for a mani & pedi at the mall tonight - I let them talk me into doing an acrylic overlay on my nails. They didn't grind them down, just roughed the surface a bit & then painted the acrylic on.

Now my fingernails hurt. My thumbnails feel like someone smashed them with a hammer! They others feels sort of "tight" and are sensitive.

Is this normal? I've only had any type of acrylics once before - for my wedding. I was just trying this to help keep the polish on longer. I don't even know how to take them off!

What should I do?? It's not so bad that I couldn't take some tylenol & go to bed - but will this make it worse by morning????

They are not supposed to hurt. I had mine for about five years and never experienced pain. I would get new ones every few months. I’d be concerned if I were you.

You can take them off by soaking them in nail polish remove with acetone. You might want to wait until you nails are not so sensitive, as that would be very painful.

They can hurt at first. I have been getting mine done for about 14 years and sometimes they are painful right after I get them done.

If they still hurt in the morning, then I would be worried!

I am a manicurist, this is NOT normal. It is normal for them to feel strange, but they should not hurt. It may just be that your nails are sensitive to the acrylic or that the acrylic is pulling on the nailbed as it cures, but that should not cause enough discomfort to require tylenol. You could be having an allergic reaction to the chemicals. (could be the acrylic, could be the primer...either way, not good)

I would advise soaking them off with an acetone based nail polish remover. It's late now, so you probably won't be able to get them off tonight. But if they feel don't feel right by morning, PLEASE soak them off!

Hope that helps.

I don't have any remover - dd used the last of it earlier this week. I usually just keep clear polish on my nails, if any at all.

I'm just going to tough it out 'till morning. If it's not better then I will get them off. Very freaky. My nails are rebelling against looking nice! :lmao:

Thanks PAW! I'm going to bed now - if they don't feel normal by morning I will take them off. I have some weird cosmetic & food allergies - never thought about my fingernails being porous enough for it to be a problem though!

It's not the skin around the nails - it's the nail bed under my fingernails that hurt. If I push lightly on the top of my nail with my fingertip, it hurts. Too bad - they look great. :confused3

Hope they feel better this morning. I feel your pain. I had a reaction like that once. Not all of them but some of them hurt. The thumbs seemed the worst. They just throbed. I compared the pain to a bad toothache. I know that sounds weird but it hurt so bad I just cried. The pain did go away though. I can't remember how long it took. Eventually I just gave up on nails all together. They're just too much hassle to upkeep. I figure just save that money for WDW and the time spent sitting in the nail salon could be better spent on the internet preparing for the trip.LOL

Ditto. Sometimes my nails feel tender after first having them done, but it goes away pretty quick.

How do they feel this morning? If they still hurt, I'd definitely soak them off.

I remember the first time I had mine applied, they hurt for a while. It was mainly pressure though, like someone was pressing down on the nail. The first time this occurred was when I let a manicurist put acrylic over my big toenail to make it appear normal (it's been removed/been knocked off several times and grows in super slowly). It felt like someone was standing on the toe for something like a day till I got used to having it on the toe. GOod luck. I know that if I have to have one replaced, they will sometimes pull the old overlay off (I know, not the best way but quicker and not as bad as soaking in acetone). This hurts to the point that I will take Motrin before having it done to head off the ache.

I've had mine done for years and never once have they hurt. They do feel different and have a heavier feeling but never any pain.

If they still hurt today and feel warm you may have a problem with your nail beds. Keeping them on could cause damage and your nail bed could actually lift.
