My next door neighbors are a Military family planning their very first trip to WDW. They are taking advantage of the military ticket discount. Their boys are 2 and 6. They might be bringing along grandparents. They are looking into Shades of Green but might stay in a condo if that can save $$. They seem to be leaning towards driving and going sometime in August. She came to me for advice but I am not familiar with military discounts. I told them about the BEST disney forum ever and am hoping I will get some great info for her. Thanks in advance for any input.

There is a SOG thread in the Resorts forum section that offers a ton of info. Right now the military member can get 40% off of WDW resort rooms and depending on the military member's rank a WDW resort might be cheaper than a SOG room. They can go to SOG Website to look at rates and availability. For the WDW resorts they'd need to call WDW to see what is available. And I believe that if they book a WDW resort for 40% they can book more than one room at that rate for if the grandparents are going with them. The last I heard they would still get free parking at the theme parks if they are staying at SOG.

The tickets - they get one free 5 day MYW PH with WP&more and can purchase up to five additional 5 day MYW tickets for $99 each. PHing and WP&more can be added for $25 each/each ticket. And the ticket vouchers can be purchased at most MWR/ITT offices or SOG if they want to keep from having to pay tax.

Have them look into the Armed Forces Vacation Club. Tell them to google it. They have two bedroom condos with a full kitchen, a small dining area and a living room, with two bathrooms!! We stayed at one in 2007 and we will be staying this year in June as well. It is 371 per week and that includes tax and everything. VERY NICE and we were only ten minute drive to the parks!!

Here is the link for the AFVC site http://www.disboards.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=31396323. They run about $329 a week and the one we stayed in at Orbit One was very nice.

There are several threads you can check out for lots of good information about the current military discount and tickets. Sorry I don't know how to post the links, but here are the names of a few you can find here on the Disboards: Military Ticket Offer - Questions and Latest Info (huge thread with lots of good info); Military discount and Dinning (yes it was mispelled) Plans; What Did you find with the Military Discount; and Military Ticket Experiences (I think that is what it was called).

On some of these threads, several people posted how they had run the numbers comparing SOG v. Disney resort rates, including dining v. not, etc. that you may find helpful. I also saw that lots of military families who come often were taking advantage of being able to stay at a Disney resort this time instead of Shades of Green since it is rare that the numbers even come close. We are staying at AKL Savannah view in June, and would probably never have done that without the 40% military discount.

Hope that helps.
