OK here's the thing - Paul and I want to go away for Christmas (not Florida) and we don't know where to start - neither of us has ever planned for such a holiday and I just don't know what to suggest.

Can anyone help? If we stay in the UK are there nice hotels (not London) who do special packages etc that anyone knows of?

If you've been away at Crimbo before where did you go - we just want to go away for the few days over Xmas or perhaps the whole Christmas week.

I've got to think of something soon or we won't ahve anything booked in time - I know I'm already cutting it fine.

Thanks in advance

Hi Sam,

I've been away at Christmas and New Year a few times, pre children of course. I went to Cyprus twice and Tennerife loads. Its actually really nice to be away at that time of year. The hotels we stayed at had special Christmas and New Year dinners which were great fun. The other really nice thing about both those places was that the weather was great although its a bit weird lying by the pool listening to Christmas carols:p

AnnMarie - we just came back from Cyprus and I'd love to go back again for Christmas but I'm not sure on the weather?

Hi Sam

We have done a few Christmas breaks too.

We did Butlins the first time in Somerset - wouldnt go there again, although to be fair we did have a good time! The kids were little and it was great fun for them. We only went away because of a family difference over who was going to spend what day where blah blah blah!! That was all we could get booked up and it wasnt that bad.

However, the next year, we went to Lanzarote and I have to say we had a great time. The weather was perfect, it was nice to lay round the pool and have Christmas carols playing - and great atmosphere in the Hotel.

We have also since holidayed in Gran Canaria during Christmas which was fab - Gran Canaria Princess Hotel was superb.

But the best was obviously our trip to Florida. Cant beat it. I would go there for Christmas in a nano second, even for just a week.

:) :) :)

Sam, I'm pretty sure when we went to Cyprus for Christmas it was in the 60s which I know for some people isn't that hot but for a Scot that's a very good summer;) I certainly remember lying by the pool although you couldn't actually go in the pool as the water was freezing and if I remember correctly the sun would disappear quite early like 4:00 p.m. and the evenings could be chilly/cold but it certainly beat the UK!

Tennerife was much the same although I think temps could reach the 70s during the day.

Where did you go in Cyprus? I've been to a few places in Cyprus over the years and loved them all. Thinking of having a week there next year before our disney trip in October.

Sam that sounded wonderful, no wonder you want to go back! Glad to hear you liked your hotel. I stayed in Limassol at the Amathus Beach Hotel about 12 years ago and loved it but I saw Limassol on one of the travel programmes a little while back and it looked like it was getting very commercialised with lots of building work taking place - did you find this?

Sam

We're going away on Dec 27th for a week in a lovely Gite in Normandy. We are going with my friend and her hubby and 2 girls. It sleeps 8 - 10 people, includes heating, linen and Seacat crossing (Dover - Calais) and is only costing £250 plus £50 for the extra car that will be coming so for a grand total of £300 for 2 families for a week in France including crossing is a bargain!

I found it on

Why Normandy in the winter???? A lovely walk to the boulangerie in the morning, a few brisk walks/games of petanque during the day and snuggling around a lovely open fire with a few bottles of wine and some crusty bread and cheese....need I say more??

Oooo Fiona that sounds divine

Ann marie - The Four Seasons was built next door to the Amathus about 10 years ago.

It was still a quiet area only a few hotels all mostly with their private beaches. About 10 restaurants/tavernas in the area. We found it really quiet and nice. I wouldn't say it's that built up. You have to walk a good 20 minutes to get to any clubs towards Limassol.

To be honest the hotel was soo good we had to drag ourselves away from it.

We went and had a look at Paphos and I found that way too busy and no sooner did we arrive than we left shame really as I was quite keen on staying at The Annabelle. Of course when I win the lottery I'm gonna stay in a suite with private plunge pool at The Annassa - now that's a hotel!!!!

But I'm still no closer to deciding on Xmas - I just came off the phone from Paul - he's in Leeds tonight - and said we need to have a serious discussion about Crimbo.

You know I wouldn't mind being holed up in The Disneyland Hotel at DLP but I doubt I'll get a look in at this late stage

Hi Sam,

I hope you find a nice place for a Christmas Break.

Our friends are staying in DLP for Xmas and you are right about all the hotels being full. They just managed to get a room at Hotel New York, via a cancellation. They are staying for 5 nights just after Xmas, so they will be there for NYE too. There maybe hotels avaialble a little earlier but it is very unlikely - I would ring NOW to see if they do have anything at The Disneyland Hotel available.

Have you been Skiing before at Christmas, we went last year it was really nice, especially all the log fires and layers of SNOW!!.
There are tons of other things to do other than skiing, - reindeer rides, snowboarding, skido driving (great fun!) and lots of shopping.

HTH
Richard.

Another vote for skiing at Christmas. It's wonderful, and you're pretty much guaranteed a white christmas! We've done it for the past four years, and can't think of a better way to enjoy ourselves during the festive season. Courchevel here we come...

Regards

Rob

Sorry guys R & R

I just don't do the skiing thing and Paul skiing - well I nearly spat my red wine out all over the place thinking about skiing - He's nocouch potatoe but he certainly doens't do the whole exercise thing. The skiing is out I'm afraid back to the old drawing board.

Thanks everyone for your help keep the suggestions pouring in,

How about Scottland? My in-laws go there for New Years and love it. Im sure some of our Scottish friends would be able to help with more of an exact location. Somewhere snowy where you DONT have to ski.

Ive only ever been to WDW over Christmas so I cant help anymore Im affraid.

You could try Cornwall, its a hoot a New Years but im not sure about Christmas time.
