Hi, I noticed on a site that rents dvc points a statement saying that the points could be transferred into another dvc member's acct.

If my home resort was VWL and there were transfer points available from another home resort which were transferred into my account, could they be used at my home resort or only the other one? If they could be used at my home resort would I be able to book at the 11 month window or would I need to wait till the 7 month window?

Thanks!

If it is another resort that is transfered they can be used at that resort at 11 months and at 7 months they can be combined with your points for any resort.

Transferred points retain their home resort and UY. If you want a points transfer so you can book VWL more than 7 months from check in, you will need a transfer of VWL points. If you had, say, BWV points transferred into your account they could be used to book BWV 11 months out but could not be used to book any nights at VWL until you are within 7 months of check in.

Think of points like currency. VWL poiints have "VWL" written all over them. If you want to book VWL more than 7 months out, you need points with "VWL" stamped on them. When booking more than 7 months out it doesn't matter where you own, what matters is having enough of the right currency to pay for your reservation, whether they are your own points or points transferred into your account.

How does it work with UY? If the points transferred in say have a Dec UY, but you need points for Jan and February and your UY is April, do you need to bank them so that you can use them then? And if banked would they then become available in Dec or April? And once banked do they retain their home resort advantage or do they now have your home resort advantage?

If you transfer in, say December 2013 points, those are good for use until November 1, 2014. Or, you can bank them into December 2014. So if you need points for January and February 2014, they would be fine. Or if you need them for January and February 2015, then you would need to bank them. If your UY is April 2013, then your points are still good until March 31, 2014, so they would also be good for a Jan/Feb 2014 trip. If your trip is in 2015, then you would have to bank your own points. Banked points retain their UY and home resort advantage.

I'll leave the UY question to someone with more experience with points transfers. Banking does not change the points' resort affiliation. For example, if I receive a transfer of BCV points and then bank them, they are still BCV points and I can still use them to book BCV more than 7 months out. I do not own BCV so I cannot use any of my own (non-BCV) points for that reservation but the transferred points give me the same 11-month booking advantage as a BCV owner.

doesn't matter if you bank them, borrow them, transfer them or what. nothing at all will allow you to book VWL with SSR pts. nothing.

if you want to book BLT, you need BLT pts (and so on...)

transferred pts retain their UY. so if i transfer in dec 2013 pts and want to book an october 2014 reservation, i would not need to bank those pts. a dec 2013 UY runs from dec 1, 2013 to nov 30, 2014.

transferred pts may be banked but cannot be borrowed.

Ah OK, so if I wanted the points for Jan or Feb 2015, I would need to bank them vs my own 2014 points which are good until March 2015. But since the banking deadline would be earlier then my banking deadline, how do I make sure I only bank the transferred points and not my points? Would that mean needing to call member services to do the banking?

I'm just curious because I suspect we bought too few points, but I'm not sure I want another contract just yet. Transferring seems like a good way to shore up your points and gives you more control than renting. (Since once the points are transferred you don't need to go through anyone else.)

i'm pretty sure transferred pts still don't show up on your online account, so you'd need to call MS to do anything with them, yes.

Thank you! I really appreciate all your help! I think I now understand transfers a lot better. :)

Transferred points are visible to the member only if they are exactly the same resort and UY that a member already owns. For example, I own BWV points with an Oct UY so if I received a transfer of BWV/Oct UY points into my account they can be added directly into my BWV/Oct UY bucket. I can make an online reservation using those points because they are in an accessible location, mixed in with my own points.

If I received a transfer of points for a resort I don't own or one that I do but with a different UY, there is no bucket in my account for those particular points so MS has to track them some other way. I won't see them online or be able to use them to book a stay online. I would have to call MS.

Ahhhh OK this makes so much sense now! I was wondering how they could keep track of points on line otherwise.

Thank you again, and I apologize for hijacking the thread but hoped my questions would be useful for the OP as well.
