Help me understand socialism/Obama!

People say that Obama has "socialist ideas". I am not very "political-minded", so I looked up socialism and what I got is that a socialist government thinks it is unfair of a small amount of the population to have so much of the wealth, and so they try to make it more fair.

I have a few questions about that:
1) What steps are taken to "prevent" this??
2) Why would you spend all that time going to school (college) if you are not going to be any financially better off that someone who didn't finish high school??

I would like to hear from anyone who wants to comment regardless of what political party you support. As I said, I'm not very knowledgeable about
politics (as I'm sure is obvious), so I don't feel comfortable posting on some of the other political threads.

And that is why people are weary of socialism. I'm still not sure Obama is going to go the socialist route. I think/hope that he'll govern from the center. His speech today about responsibility was quite refreshing.

Political labels are great, except most of them will fit any politician in one way or another.

Just curious - where on earth did you "look that up"? That's not even close to the definition of Socialism.

Not to be too rude - but if you really want to understand, I'd start with a Dictionary before asking more questions here.
