My 9 year old is a girl so I'm not sure I can help there, but she likes Harry Potter books and there is also a nice dinosaur book out called Encyclopedia Prehistorica Dinosaurs, it's really cool.
For the 7 year old I would recommend Junie B. Jones books or The Magic Treehouse series.
For the 5 year old I would recommend Clifford books, Franklin, Disney Princess (there's a pretty Disney Princess Treasury that's a large book of short stories, it's nice).
Also Shel Silverstein poem books like Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, and Runny Babbit are good for all ages, girls and boys. Hope that helps! Books are my favorite gift for kids, I get my own each at least one book for Christmas each year, for their birthday and in their Easter baskets.
I don't have any kids of my own, but my nieces really liked the Little House on the Prairie books, and the Chronicles of Narnia (when they were about 7-9) Shel Silverstein is always good.
I don't have any kids, but my two favorite books as a child were Morris the Moose Goes to School and Wacky Wednesday. I am 30 years old and when I have kids, I will definitely have those books in my house. They are great! I love Morris the Moose!
My 9 yo boy really like books by Louis Sachar (Holes), RL Stine, Roald Dahl (James and the Giant Peach). Also he loves, along with my 6yo boy, silly poems by Shel Silverstein. It also depends on what kind of readers you have. I have alot of other suggestions if you want to PM me. Good Luck and keep on reading!
Boys that age really seem to like Guiness Book of records and those "ology" books too.
My 8 & 10 year old boys enjoy the Fudge series of books by Judy Blume as well as the Michigan and American Chillers books- the authors name I cannot remember right now.
My 9y/o boy, who is athletic, likes the Matt Christopher books, about sports, of course. He also loves The Series of Unfortunate Events. At 7, my DD liked Junie B Jones & the American Girl Series.
Arthur the aardvark books by Marc Brown were my DD's absolute favorites. They come in both picture books and beginning chapter books, so they would work for all three of those ages. For the 5-7 age range, we absolutely love picture books by Kevin Henkes, especially "Chrysanthemum" and "Lily's Purple Plastic Purse." His mouse heroines are full of spunk, and the books are beautifully illustrated.
For the 9 year old, how about the Lemony Snickett series? There are now 12 books, and my daughter started reading them in 3rd grade, she couldn't put them down.
For the 7 year old, Junie B Jones, Horrible Harry and a new series out now called Geronimo Stilton (that one is really cute too)
My dd started reading the american girl books when she was 7. These are really popular for girls 7- 11. Specifically the Samantha series is really good and easiest to understand. My almost 5 yr. old dd likes anything with characters: Strawberry shortcake, care bears, franklin(a turtle), Arthur, clifford the dog. The Little House books are good and also they make smaller picture books of the stories with just a shortened version of a chapter in the book.
From this retired grade 1 teacher: another vote for Junie B. Jones for the 7 yo (I could get kids to do anything with a promise of reading these books) and for the 5 yo how about Brown Bear, Brown Bear and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (2 perennial favorites of kindergarteners).
I agree with those 2 choices also. I used to babysit and the kids loved those.
For the older kids maybe check with their parents about their reading levels. I know when I volunteered at the school many of the girls had much higher reading levels than the boys so you may find the 7 & 9 year olds have the same reading level. AR (accelerated reader) basically tests the kids at the begining of the school year and gives them their level. If they use the AR program you can then call your local school or library and ask if they use the AR program and if you can see a list appropriate books for each level. Actually same goes for the 5 year old. Many times we saw the kids that had attended pre-school reading way ahead of the kids that did not attend pre-school.
