Help me save money on food...We're flying

We stayed at the AKL in May and mailed down a big box of snacks and drinks and had no problem. It was better than toting it around the airport and got there in plenty of time. As for foods that need to stay cold, sorry, we did do the dining plan.

:sunny:

I have sucessfully packed cases of canned soda in checked baggage several times and never had it explode. I did pack it in a suitcase with stuff that could be laundered easily in case it did exploded but it never did. It was also a small suitcase so I was not over the weight limit as another poster said, it is heavy.

By the way, it was caffeine free mountain dew (yes, they do make it) that I could only find in New Hampshire. I was trying to get off caffeine and mountain dew is the only soda I drink.

Last year we stayed 10 days at CSR and I got a lot of great tips from these boards on saving money/time/dinning. We rented a car so we were able to go to the grocery store. Which was the best thing we could have done. We had breakfast in the room every morning and on the days that we stayed at the pool we had lunch in as well.

I purchased from the grocery store:
bagels
cheese
yogurt
a case of bottled water
fresh fruit
iced tea packets (single size for bottled water)
milk
deli meat
buns for sandwiches
beer (for DH to party at the pool with our friends :rotfl2: )
soda pop

I brought a few things from home:
single serve cereal boxes
granola bars
fruit roll ups
tea and coffee + I have a travel size kettle
single oatmeal packets
pringle potato chips
sharp knife and plastic plates from the dollar store (throw away after)
palmolive disposable dish clothes(the ones that contain soap--for washing dishes)

I also baked cheese and bacon tea biscuits froze them and put them in a throw away hard plastic container.

Another really great idea that I got was to go into the food court at the hotel and get a supply of single size peanut butter/jam/cream cheese or what ever they have that your family will use. Also, forks, spoons and knives.

In the 10 days we were there we only spent about $500 on food (family of 4)and that was including the groceries. We had nice dinners every night but quite often shared meals because the portions were to large for one person alone.

I think the next time I won't be renting a car so, I might try the online grocery delivery. It sounds great.

One time I was on a plane and the lady that sat down beside me had one of the soft sided coolers on wheels as her carry on. I'm sure you could pack pop or juice boxes that way. The only thing is that it might excede that weight limit.
