So, I'm having difficulties deciding between the 3 on-site resorts at Universal Orlando.

Tell me which one you stayed at and what was the best and worst of times for you?

Never stayed sorry or even been to Florida but we are booked in at RPR for 3 nights in December. Look for Alicia's TR, she stayed there too.

I booked there too but I'm still thinking HRH. Would live pierogi no but can't justify price.

Personally, I don't live pierogi; but I do enjoy eating them. And I didn't find them too pricey. :lmao:

Yeah....its a toss up between HRH, PBR and PRH for me. DH is no help...he asked what the price difference was and then figured that I should just pick the one that I liked best. :faint:

we stayed at RPR = royal pacific resort. it was beautiful.

while touted as the 'cheapest' on site hotel and ideal for families, we found it to work out amazingly well for us.

we were in a room in the royal tower, on level 3 which was just above ground level.. it was really lovely. our room overlooked a nice grassy nook, lots of foliage and no one around for miles.

the room itself was lovely.. 2 huge beds, armoire with tv, the requisite fridge full of overdraft-fee inducing snack foods and beverages and a table and chairs. our room had a full bathroom, with the vanity on the outside in an alcove, which made getting ready in the morning a breeze, even with 3 adults in the room with their own way of doing things. we had a full size closet in the room, plenty of space to store luggage, iron & ironing board, linen bags etc etc and spare pillows and blankets in the room, which was a bonus.

downside is that you pay a $9.95/day internet fee, or $24 per 3 day block. it's not that uncommon outside disney to pay the internet fee as most resorts/hotels around the area have that fee, or a similar 'resort fee' that encompasses the internet use.

the hotel is beautifully themed, lots of balinese/polynesian influences. we found getting to the parks to be easy breezy, either via water taxi (2 mins) or the walking path (4-5 mins, sometimes this will get you there faster depending on whether the water taxi has just left or not). the water taxis are similar to the 'friendship' water transport at wdw.

the hotel is modern, clean, spacious and well thought out. there are lots of private areas and lots of places to sit & relax without feeling like you're intruding on someone else's leisure time.

in terms of the benefits: front of the line access to the rides is awesome. if you stay onsite, you can use this as many times as you want, including for re-riding the same attraction you just got off... the one you buy has a limit of one time per attraction per guest per day. the one you get for free staying onsite is keyed to your room card, which is waterproof, so no worrying about getting it wet on the water rides... also, this adds to the fun factor for kids (or adults who are really kids at heart) as you don't really have to line up again if you find a ride you want to do again and again. only prob is that you can't use it in harry potter world, and it's not able to be used on some rides, but each ride will state at the entrance which have express pass validation and which don't.

other onsite perk is getting to the park 1 hr before the rest of the plebs (joking :) )who don't stay onsite. this is awesome. kind of like EMH but much less crowded and way more beneficial for getting in line for things like forbidden journey or ollivanders wand shop experience.

forbidden journey (if you want to ride) & ollivanders are experiences you must get there early for or else risk waiting in the sun for hours and hours.

forbidden journey has several components... you can do the walk through line (for those who don't want to ride - it skips sections like the greenhouse and the front hall), the ride line (but don't ride, then you get to see/experience the interactive displays along the whole way, and you can take pics of the great hall) or the ride line (where you ride). this is a fabulous experience even if you don't ride (as i didn't). the whole harry potter area is themed beautifully, even more so than areas of disney (please don't burn me at the stake)

if you have any questions, i'm here to answer them.

oh, and make sure you try the frozen butterbeer before you try the regular butterbeer. frozen = awesome. regular = regular bleh. also, get the souvenir mugs. they aren't cheap, but they are great for refills and can be hung from a lanyard or dclip on a backpack throughout the day. also they will rinse them out for you in restaurants. if you want the regular mug, they say 'butterbeer' on them. there are mugs that say 'hogs head tavern' but they can only be purchased by adults 21+ in the actual tavern when buying something alcoholic, and they won't fill them up with anything but alcoholic beverages. if you want the mug but don't want to get it dirty with drinks, you can ask them to serve the alcohol in a to-go cup and keep the souvenir mug nice and pristine.

oh, and yes. universal islands of adventure is not dry. you can buy a refreshing margarita or icy beverage or pina colada or long island iced tea there. it's great... but i don't think many people do, as nobody we saw was drunk or in any way intoxicated or acting like idiots. everyone was very lovely and civilized and respectful.

so yes, ask away :cheer2:

Thanks Alicia. DH and I have been to the Dark Side before and we love WWoHP. We did get there early and are well aware of the lines for Ollivanders and FJ. DS has not been there and he's seen the pictures of the water rides at IoA that we took when we went. He really really wants to get wet on those rides. :)

I appreciate your comments of RPR. I am debating between RPR and HRH. Thanks.

I am no help sorry when we went to the dark side we just drove over each day.

i have pics of rpr if you want them, including the main dining room, the regular rooms (real, not photoshopped like some on the hotel page are) plus pics of amenities like main foyer, croquet lawn, wantilaan luau outdoor stage area etc. just let me know and i'll put them up :)

hrh is supposed to be great, and i think the rooms are an eensy bit bigger, but i've heard rumours that they play loud music in the halls and main areas, plus they play music underwater which can be bothersome at night if you're in a water-facing room.

sorry for the extraneous info, PIO. i forgot that you had been to universal before. silly me :sad2:

Yes, please post pics.

Don't be sorry....it is useful information to add on this thread. It all helps!

That's the drawcard of HRH. I'm travelling with two boys - both of which love loud music! :scared1:

We stayed at HRH and loved it, we choose it because the pool had a slide, I think my kids used it once!
We loved the walk to US, it was lovely and relaxing, although we also used the boat which was great. the little coffee shop was great to get a quick relatively cheap meal.
We will be back in 2014 and I think we will choose RPR next time, just to try something different.

Oh and don't forget you can get a discount with your NRMA/RACQ membership if you have one, I called up and had the 10% discount applied easily.

That's the exact reason why I've chosen HRH for my upcoming trip. My DH loves Rock music and he listens to it loudly all day while he's working and driving. My son is rapidly taking after my husband.
Lying around a pool with loud music playing both in and out of the water is not necessarily my idea of a relaxing holiday, but they will love it. And if they're happy, I'll be happy. DH will probably also enjoy looking at all the memorabilia everywhere.

Based on pictures, I also slightly prefer the decor of the HRH rooms. They just look a bit more bright and spacious to me (although the RPR rooms look lovey also).

I've seen quite a few pics of a magazine rack in HRH rooms with copies of Rolling Stone magazine. I hope that comes standard in all rooms as I like little added touches like this. It's a nice reminder that you're not just in any old hotel.

Even though Portofino Hotel has the themeing that appeals to me the most, I didn't consider it due to the lack of kid appeal, the price, and the fact it has the longest walk to the parks. We want to be able pop back to the hotel midday for a swim or to change out of wet-ride clothes, so the short walk to HRH is really appealing.

Happy choosing. At the end of the day, you probably can't make a bad choice as all 3 look great.

Sorry PIO, I'm not much help with the dark side. Robynrainer stayed at HRH last year and had a great experience. I've texted her so hopefully she'll drop in and post a reply. popcorn::

I wish we could be photoshopped in real life, then that big pimple that decided to make it's home on my forehead overnight would be gone :faint:

Ditto HRH . Melbourne 5 did 3n in 2011 ) and enjoyed . Very cool location for the lads ( even my wife enjoyed too). Rooms far more generous in size to, dare I say it, the grand Floridian at wdw!

I went through DU for our RPR booking and applied the RACQ/AAA discount but it didn't apply to the bed and breakfast rate though so I changed it to room only. The difference saved was more than what we'd eat in breakfast anyway so it was a bonus for us.

Thanks gogo! I'll remember the AAA discount!

I think that's why its such a hard decision. All 3 look great!

Where's the poll? :surfweb:

Ask and ye shall receive! (There's even an OTHER category. :rotfl:)

Thanks Marlea. I'm really really touched by the gesture. :flower3:

HRH seems to be the place of choice!

PIO, glad you liked the poll and the good humour it was created in :thumbsup2 Anyway, I was looking for an excuse to join the 'poll creators club' :cool1:

I stayed at RPR on the 4 night Harry Potter deal and I think it is a lovely lovely hotel. Rooms were large and very comfy. Pretty good places to eat, lovely gardens. :goodvibes
The only uncomfortableness was when I was checking out I asked the reception people why when the hotel is called RPR does it have a Bali theme - which is in the Indian Ocean. the way they looked at me (as if they didn't know what to do with the crazy woman) just made me wonder what all these people were doing in high school geography classes instead of geography. :rotfl2:

the only other thing that happened was noisy people arriving back at the room at 2am, and then having a drunken argument. I realised I was too used to Disney.
However, if I go again I would stay at HRH simply because it is very close to the entrance to both parks (10 min walk from RPR) and I am lazy.

have you tried TripAdvisor for photos? I don't have any of my room.
