I have this weird grass/weed growing into my nice lawn. I've used weed sprays, I've pulled it all out from the roots, and it's still growing and spreading. It grows really fast and is much taller then the normal grass days after I mow. I'm afraid it's going to overcome my entire lawn! Anyone know what this is and what I can do about it?

Oh we get that crud grass too! I call it water grass and have no idea why. LOL. Do you use a lawn service or fertilize yourself?

Wow. I have the same issue in NE PA. I have no idea what it is. It's almost an ornamental type grass and it's spreading aggressively. It pulls out very easily but always comes back, and quickly too.

We ferltilize ourselves, like we have for years. It popped up out of nowhere. I'm hoping there's a way to get rid of it.

I don't know the scientific name but it looks like "nutgrass" to me. Not sure though.

It's hard to tell for sure from the pics but I'm thinking that is Nut Grass. If it gets tall enough, does it actually start to open up like in this picture?

There is also a variety that is more purplish than yellow but the shape is about the same.

If you have it, you're not alone. I have to fight it off every year. UGH!

Yep, that's nutgrass all right. We have that same junk growing in our yard. It started out in two oak barrel containers we bought (must have been contaiminated with seeds or something). It kept growing in the containers and I kept ripping it out, and then a few springs got into the flower bed, and now we're seeing it popping up in the lawn. I found some Bayer Advantage stuff that is supposed to kill it, and we'll try it in the spring. Seems like I read that it has to be killed early in the growing season.

I concur. It's nutgrass. It's a bear to get rid of.

Pull the nutgrass before it seeds (as in last photo). Fertilize the lawn well and make it grow thick and full. It will eventually overtake the nutgrass.

Next spring, be sure to get a pre-emergent herbicide on it before it seeds out.

Yep, looks like Nutsedge to me! We have it on our lawn too. My husband used to major in turf grass management, so he knows all about this "wonderful" little weed. He used to bring home some hifalutin chemicals to treat it, and even that was only a temporary fix.

Here's some info from hubby's old school: http://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheets/hgic2312.htm

No, it doesn't flower. Just tall, wide blades.

I wish I could help. We have that grass too. In the backyard we go by the rule, "If it is green, cut it and it will blend in!"

Around here teh lawn Co calls it Beach grass. it spreads like crazy. seems the more you pull the faster it spreads. I had the lawn done and this year there is an entire section that has been taken over by it. the lawn guy said it must have been seeded in someones mulch or dirt delivery because it is spreading all over the neighborhood.
