I thought all I had to do was plug it in to a new computer and transfer the purchases. Did it with another ipod and it worked. DD's said we couldn't because it said it was sync'd to another itunes account or library, now I can't remember which but if we proceeded it would erase. Now what? We tried putting the songs on a jump drive and drag and dropping them into the library but that didn't work either, it was like they weren't there. So I deleted them, any suggestions? Is there a help number? Its really weird cause the other older classic is from the same account although it doesn't have some of the newer purchases cause my other DD stopped using it a year or so ago. And it transferred fine.

I have a classic ipod, and it worked fine by transferring the songs to my new library, and dragged them to itunes. I would search on youtube for videos of 'how to transfer ipod touch'...that's what helped me!

I am basically in the same boat. My old computer died - no way to transfer purchased songs - and I cannot get my new computer to accept my ipod and already open account. The only thing I've been doing since last xmas when my computer died is recharge the thing. No new music for almost a year. It sucks.

Apple has had a one-time re-download policy in the past. You should contact them through the iTunes support link and ask them if they will give you a re-download of your purchases on your account to your new computer. (Good reminder for all though about backing up to an external drive.)

I can't speak to the "accept my iPod and already open account" piece - I don't really understand that part, but there are often very good answers to things like that in the Support forums on the Apple site.

For the "downloading past purchases" issue, iTunes started a new service where you can download most-if not all of your past iTunes purchases. I think you need to have the latest version of iTunes available, where you can enable the iTunes cloud service or something of the sort. I've done it, and it even has the songs I got back in 2007. :thumbsup2

When you're on the main iTunes Store page, look to the upper right (where "Quick Links" is), in that section there should be a link called "Purchased" with an orange "New!" tab next to it. Click on that and it'll direct you to your past downloads.

As for the syncing, I think there's an option in settings or whatnot where you can disable automatic syncing when you plug in a new device (which would wipe out all the data on your ipod to match it up with the library of the new computer you just plugged it to, and we DEFINITELY don't want that!). I learned that the hard way with my old iPod Nano....*shudders at memory* :sad2: But yeah, do some poking around in the settings or "preferences" in itunes and you should find it in there somewhere. I'd be more exact, but I'm on my Macbook Pro atm, so the layout's different.

I bought PD+Rescue (off Amazon) for my oldest son and I think he said he was able to get everything off his Ipod and onto his new laptop. (He only had a laptop for a month when it bit the dust so it was replaced) He was not quite 15 at the time and had no problems figuring out how to use the program.

Yes, using iCloud in the new mobile OS would work as well. I didn't mention that because I wasn't sure what the PP's situation was relative to which iPod, which version of the OS was being used, etc.

Maybe this Apple article will help. iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer

There are instructions on how to move your music library to a folder on an external hard drive in order to back up your itunes files or to port them to another computer. I have so many CDs that I've ripped to itunes that I keep a back up hard drive file of them so that I don't have to do it again.

If you can't figure out what itunes account that the music is linked to, you might want to look into purchasing some software for migrating the music from the ipod to the new computer. We had to do this for my daughter's ipod touch when her computer died and there was no back up for all of the music that she had from sources other than itunes. I used a program called CopyTrans and it worked great. The only problem was that the itunes songs that it transferred were no longer recognized by itunes as having been purchased from them. But every song did move from her ipod to itunes on the new computer without any loss of integrity.
