Welcome to the DISboards!

Everyone has different opinions on motion sickness. I'll briefly state that I'm the world's worst. I have an awful time riding in cars; I have to drive if possible. I won't take any route which includes too many turns. I was skeptical before taking my first DCL trip. Three cruises later, (plus one on Carnival), I've NEVER had a problem, ESPECIALLY on DCL. Maybe we've been lucky, as the weather and water conditions have been good. Other posters here will suggest Bonine, or the behind the ear patch. I've never used either, even though I took them with us. So don't let motion sickness fear keep you from taking what will probably be your best vacation yet!

As far as a table for just your own family, you can request it, but it's not guaranteed. You won't know your dining assignments until you check-in.

You have every reason to be excited as you are! There's a wealth of info on these boards! Most people here are repeat cruisers, and can answer most any questions you have.

Well I guess I will not worry about it....but I do get very motion sick...but I will just make sure to get some meds from my doctor before we leave! I am so excited and can't wait. I am actually thinking of booking a Costa Maya trip in 2006 now also.

Motion sickness is triggered by different motions in different people. As Mickeyhugger gets sick in cars, but not on DCL, I am just the opposite. I'm fine in cars, planes, rollercoasters, but put me onboard a boat or ship and I'm toast. I have to wear 2 patches and supplement with TripTone, my ReliefBand and ginger when onboard. I also dive, so I'm on boats more than I would like.

Mid ship is best. I have to have a veranda for fresh air and to see the horizon. Interior cabins would kill me. I cannot spend a lot of time in any of the interior spaces, including the restaurants and theater. The waitstaff is really good about packing everything to go though.

If you are going to get the patch from your doctor, please test it on land before your trip to make sure you don't have any side effects. Another good tip is to cover it with a piece of tape, I cut the sticky part of a flex bandaid for this. It will reduce the chance of spreading the patch medicine to your eyes. The medicine dilates your eyes and, besides making it hard to read, it can make you dizzy.

Good luck.

My DH has a hard time - always drives, has to take Bonine to fly and also takes it when we are on the Magic. I had suggested early on in our marriage (married 25 years) that a cruise would be fun and he nixed the idea so I did ask again - until July of 2000. We are DVC memebers and they sent a mailing with special rates. I showed it to DH and he said it sounded like fun - that was all the encouragement I needed, we were booked the following Monday for October that year. To shorten the story - we have cuised every year since. He had a problem cruising in Alaska and one day last September (we were being chased by a hurricane). We have a November Thanksgiving Wonder trip booked as well as December on the Magic booked for this year.

But, each person is different. See your doctor and take what medications are prescribed or suggested - don't wait until you are sick as it is all about prevention!

On our first sailing Dw was fine until she got to dinner the first night.....we sat at the table and she saw the water in the glasses move....she went back to the room. She WAS thankful that we had a verandah as Honu said, the fresh air and being able to look at the horizon helped....the next 3 sailings she took her "meds" 4 hours prior to sailing and was fine. The only other time she felt sick was on our 03 Eastern....we were on the tail end of a late season hurricane and there were 28 ft swells........myself and DDs had no effect!!

Lampskies, :rotfl: :rotfl2: :rotfl: :rotfl2: for the water moving in the glass statement!!!!

I can get motion sick driving myself!!!! Hasn't happened since "the seizure incident, but it was pretty bad at the time!!!

I start taking dramamine less drowsy when we go to the airport and then every 12 hours (just 1) after that until I am home, in my house, in my bed!!!

I also have an electric wrist band that I think works ( it could be all in my head!!!). But it doesn't work that well in the pool!!! No I haven't tried it in the pool!!!!

You don't need it in the pool because that is my personal best place to be when it gets a little wavy!!! After St. Thomas, it was pretty rocky. We had a wave pool, no kidding!!! It was fun, as long as I stayed in the water!!! Even if I tried to sit on the side of the pool, no way!!!

It was a good thing that it was warm and sunny. I stayed in from 10-5 that day!!!

If you are sick, DO NOT go into the theater. MOVING CURTAINS will send you straight to the railing!!!!!

DO NOT have an alcoholic drink. I know you might think, hey why not, I'm sick anyway. It will make it worse. Ask your waiter for ginger ale and saltines!!! You can take it back to your room.

Now you may ask, why cruise? Oh, because the small amount of time (10 hours on a 7 night) that I was sick, was worth every minute on board!!!

I just wanted to add, that I also think that it is best to keep eating even if you don't feel like it. I know for me, I get sick the most with an empty stomach. So definitely ask for the saltines. I also do better with something salty. A nurse told me this once, and it really does help.

you guys have been great! thank you so much! I will be prepared for sure! I am so excited and can't wait until Sept 24th! keri
