Help me decide on amount of points...

In my research from reading all the posts. It seems to be better to buy a lesser amount of points and add on. Perferably at different resorts so you get the 11 month advantage. Am I wrong on this?

If that number needs to start with a 2 or 3..lol...I need to look more into resale maybe. Or wait a few years :(

Yes I would def go resale!

If it were for us, I would go with 160 at Animal Kingdom Lodge, buying it at about $75(ish) per point. See how many trips we were taking and how many times we had to borrow from the next years points.

You can always add more later and you do not want to have one very large contract anyway, two smaller contracts are much easier to resell in the future. It's much easier to sell one or two 160(ish) contracts than one 300 point contract kwim? Since resell needs cash to buy not many people have an extra $25,000 available to buy a vacation property whereas $10,000 is much more manageable. ;)

Not trying to be a PIA, but I have thought about this. At the end of the day, if the kids are coming on vacation with us, they are gonna suck it up and sleep on the damn pull out.....untill they are old enough to buy there own place :lmao:

I'm 34 and sleep on an air mattress at times when we travel. I'm taking them to Disney, and they will learn to appreciate what they are given, not complain about their bed. Just MHO.

Right on! :rotfl:

No, I don't think that is the wrong way to go. Start with something to cover at least your main trip and then go from there. You can always add on later if you find you can't make what you have work.

When we bought, we bought enough to cover our summer trip. We knew that eventually we would want more and have since added on but figured it was good to start slow and make sure we were happy with DVC--and we are!!!

So, if you know that one of your trips would be 150 points, I might start out with 175 or so, just to give flexibility and go from there. With banking and borrowing, it is possible to get a 2nd trip in maybe every few years while you wait to add on.

Good luck!

I agree. I have friends who bought when they were in the park a few years ago. They were "caught up" and they bought what they thought they would need for two trips a year. Turns out, they are "Disneyed" out and wish they had bought less. They end up taking people with them and getting a 2 bedroom with the points instead of going by themselves. In the end, it works for them, but they are spending more on dues each year than they needed too. They took us last year, and we had a great time.....on their nickel! They didn't mind as it made their trip more fun too. So now we are looking to buy in on a small contract, and maybe every so often combine our points with them for a treehouse villa or BLT villa one time. We'll see what the future holds.

I figure to buy resale for the amount I think we need now, staying conservative. Adding on may not be so hard in the future, and if we need to sell part some day, it will be easier as others have stated.

I'd cast another vote for only buying what you can comfortably afford. You can always add on later. In our family, not every disney trip needs to be DVC. Sometimes its nice to grab a $65 AP discounted rate at POP Century for the "long weekend" trip to save some points.

If you plan to sell in the future, you will have to sell an entire contract. Like in the case of your friends, they are stuck with all their points unless they sell the entire contract. Only Disney can break up contracts into smaller contracts. Just one reason why current members suggest purchasing smaller contracts or groups of smaller contracts. Makes it easier to sell in the future.
