Help me convince my DH to go this May...please!

I'm wanting to take advantage of the awesome Disney Visa deal and go May 3through the 8th but my DH is not too keen on the idea. I went behind his back and got a quote from MouseFanTravel just for an idea of cost and it would be cheaper than when we went last May. He says he'd rather do something small like the Mall of America, bleh. The cost difference between the two is about $1400 but it's more time at WDW and my two DD's (6 and 5) have been begging to go back. They ask me about going back every day. Is there anyone else out there who has a spouse that has to be sweet talked about going back to Disney? I'd venture to take them by myself but not sure if I could handle a week travling with the both of them and no DH. Advice, please!

Find something to do at WDW that interests him. I can always tempt my DH with golf and/or Nascar. He loves to golf the WDW courses and also loved the Nascar experience. They have so many options beside the parks. Fishing, boating, parasailing.

I can't believe your husband wants to go to mall of america over WDW. Just tell him about all the stuff you are going to buy at the mall and maybe he will change his mind.

Last year, I brought up the idea of returning to WDW and DH wasn't too keen either (he's not yet a mouselover...I'm working on him). He said he'd rather the two of us go somewhere. Ok, sounds great, where? Maybe Mexico he suggests. I start looking into prices, find a good deal and have him ask his parents about keeping the kids for 4 days. First they say yes, then when I ask him to get them to commit so we can book, it turns into a No. (No big surprise there).
So, I look into the cost of the 4 of us going to Mexico. For 4 of us (kids 4 and 2) at a resort that has a kids club that the 2yr old can go into, with flights, and a room at an all inclusive for 5 days 4 nights it was over $2500! Well, Disney was offering free dining for oct, nov dec so i priced it out for comparision. We where able to do flights, a room at Pop (my Mom ended up coming with so the kids stayed in her room ), park tickets and free qsdp (and a PIN to upgrade to free ddp) for 8 days 7 nights it was $1200! No Kidding!
We then talked about how we would spend our days in Mexico versus Disney. At Disney the kids are entertained from the time they wake up to the time they fall into bed! We don't have to turn ourselves into clowns to keep them happy.
When I put the numbers on paper, he saw how much sense going to Disney made.

BTW - since Mom was with, she kept the kids one morning while I surprised DH with the Around the World on a Segway tour. It was the highlight of our trip! After the tour we ate and drank our lunch around the WS. It was the most romantic/fun morning ever!

This year I used the rehab notice of fantasyland as the threat. "...but they are redoing fantasyland and it will never be like it was when you were a kid, and don't you want to see it one last time before it is all different?"

My DH is not a big WDW fan.....he would rather go to Washington DC and watch them pass laws (BORING). So years ago I decided he could go see laws be passed and I would take the girls and go to WDW. We always have a much better time without him!!!! We are going in May - and no surprise DH is not going - he is dog-sitting.

We've been going to WDW without my dh for about 5 years. We usually take a family vacation somewhere else in the year, then just the kids & I do a WDW vacation every 9-18 months. Since we go so often, we usually only stay 4 nights.

It's alot cheaper to go with just one adult, especially with the meal plan. My middle child is now 11, so we have to pay adult prices for her. We haven't been to WDW since she was 9. The price really jumps up!

You can definitely go to WDW without your dh. Get the meal plan, make character meal adrs, and have a blast! The only issue I had was who was going to sit where, who was going to sleep with me, etc. So, we planned that in advance. We decided who would sit where on the plane, where we would sit on the rides, who would sleep with me at the hotel. I also use a backpack so I have 2 hands free.

I am going in May with my 3 girls & a friend from work, DH is staying home. It was his idea. He is actually a mouselover too but he says he wants the week alone to work on the yard and the house. I think he just wants to play golf without having to worry about being home at certain times. Plus now that we have a ticket plan for the Phillies he has a game to go to.

You can take them yourself - esp if your oldest is 11. It will be a fun girls trip! You may actually have more fun than you think you will too.

the idea of taking our two daughters by myself has crossed my mind since all 3 of us want to go and he doesn't. One just turned 7 and the other just turned 5. My only problem with going just the three of us is both girls have different tastes in rides, etc. so what do I do with the one that doesn't want to go on a particular ride, etc? Or...one will want to stay in the hotel room and the other will want to go back to MK in which case, the DH stays back in the room with the party pooper. Thanks to everyone for their advice. I'm still working on him - I need to hurry. The dates I have planned to go are May 3rd - 8th!

That is what kid's clubs are for. I am a single mom who has taken DD since she was 5. Naturally, there were some rides I wanted to go on, but she couldn't or didn't want to. My answer: kid's club, let her hang out there for awhile while I went back and rode the rides I wanted. She actually loved the club, so she ended up going every night.

I was going to say that you should honor his desire until you said that he wanted to go to Mall of America- seriously?

I would compromise on a vacation that would be fun for everyone but then WDW every few years is enough for us, we both like to visit other places- it's a big world.

You know that I'm on your side, but I agree with the poster who said that going behind DH's back probably wasn't going to end well. It might, but you know how that going-behind-the-back can almost always backfire.

I would sit down with him and ask him exactly why he doesn't want to go to WDW (another poster mentioned this, too). Maybe some kind of compromise can be reached. Maybe (and hopefully) he'll agree to you and the girls going without him. Another poster mentioned to find something besides the parks that interests him. Good idea.

As the wife of another non-"mouselover" I understand your position. Perhaps it's just not the right time for you to go. however getting a quote is just information...it's not choosing to spend thousands of dollars without agreement from your spouse.

BUT if you think of it as going behind his back...it's prob. not the best thing.

Is this a money issue? you'll enjoy going more if you're in the financial position to pay for it (even if it's not as good of a deal later!)

Hope you get to see Mickey in May....but know you'll enjoy any trip you get to take with your family.

Sorry, my comments are off topic, but $1200 including air, really? How did you do that? We had a similar stay last Dec at Pop for 8 nights (2 A, 1 C-6), had the pin for free regular dining, and with park hoppers we paid around $1600. This did not include airfare.

No, you were right! I had a typo! I meant to say $1900 including air. I just looked again and with all those taxes on air & bag fees it was closer to $2200. But I sold DH on the fact that it was $1900.

I still don't understand how you did this. Right now we are going to POP for 6 days with free QSDP and it's about $1900 without air.

when I said I was going "behind his back", I meant just getting a quote - not actually booking it.

We've talked about it since Weds. and the answer is still a definite "NO".

BTW - the trip was going to run us $1675 for 2 adults 2 children with the Disney Visa promo - 6 days / 5 nights with QSDP. Does not include the $760 for air. And, no, he just doesn't want to go - has nothing to do with financials. He claims he doesn't want to spend $2300 to go to a glorified amusement park to ride Dumbo 7 times.

Just take your kids by yourself. If it is finacially possible, there is no reason why you can't go without him.

The whole idea of "convincing" someone in the family to take a vacation they just don't want to take is wrong, IMO. You said yourself in your first post...you were just there about a year ago, and I'm assuming he went with you then.

Your kids won't suffer if they don't get to go again this year. If anything, the magic remains longer in their lives if they DON'T go back that often. We travel there every 3-4 years, and even at 18 my daughter finds all of WDW enchanting. If we had gone every year, by now it would be boring.

Strike a deal with him...ask him what HE wants to do/where HE wants to go as a family, and make it happen. Tell him you'd be happy to plan the vacation he wants if he agrees that next year, you can go to Disney again.

Its all about balance...and making sure that no single person in the family is always left out.

Still a great deal for everything though. We are in Oklahoma and ended up driving the last trip, airfare never came down below $300 each.
