Help me choose!

Thank you everyone for your imput! I ended up buying the Nikon D40. Side by side features of the cameras in my price range were comparable, and it ended up being on sale this week at my local camera store. I think this is going to be a great camera for me as I attempt to improve my photography skills. Thanks again -- I love this board. Everyone is so helpful and friendly, and the pictures you all post are amazing!

Welcome to the DIS Nikon family. May I ask which lens(es) you are starting out with? Just a warning - buying DSLR lenses is like eating salted peanuts...it's hard to stop.

I got the Nikkor 18-55 and Nikkor 55-200. Already looking at what is available for this camera. I hear the 70-300mmVR (going by memory on that so could be incorrect with the actual model) is an awesome lens. Have you used any of the Nikon compatible Sigma lenses? I'm sure I'll be asking a lot of questions and saving my money for more toys for the camera :) Hoping for some sunshine here in Washington (rather than the snow we've been getting!) so I can go try out the camera and start learning.

I have the 70-300vr as do many of the Nikon faithful around these parts, and it is a very good lens for the money. The Sigma 30/1.4 is highly regarded by many on this board and elsewhere, as well. It has the advantage of being an "HSM" lens, which is Sigma's designation for a lens with the focus motor in the lens, meaning it will autofocus on the D40/D40x/D60.

Yeah- What Ed said.

:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 For the 70-300vr and the Sigma 30/1.4

If you're looking at the camera itself, it's easily to mistake a Pentax for a Nikon, most Pentax DSLRs can be mistaken for a D50 or D80. You can tell them from the other entry-levels easily by the presence of a top LCD. :teeth:

Nope the pentaxs are missing the ugly red splotch on the grip :rotfl2:
