Hi,
we are planning a trip for May of 2007. I have narrowed my hotel choice down to 3. If anyone has stayed at these hotels and could give me an opinion I would really appreciate it. Also, I really want to stay close to the gates of the park at an affordable rate. The three hotels are:

Howard Johnson
Tropicana Inn
Red Roof Inn Maingate

Thanks for any help

All I can say is we stayed at HOJO last weekend and enjoyed it. We had previously stayed at the DLH. The room at HOJO's was big, the walk not bad, good places to eat around and dd loved the pool. I do not anything about your other choices, but I would stay at HOJO's again.

I have stayed at both the Tropicana and Howard Johnson's and had enjoyable stays at both. I give the Tropicana an edge because it is very close (less than five minutes to the turnstiles), has a free (minimal but free) breakfast and is generally a bit cheaper. The Howard Johnson's has nicer grounds, larger rooms and two pool areas. I would not hesitate to stay at either but again prefer the Tropicana due to its location and recent refurb (I think the HoJo has been or is being refurbed too, not certain though). Good luck with your decision!

Ive only stayed at HOJOs but it was great.
Clean, free net access, beautiful grounds and poolS
7 minutes walk from DL
Right next door to Mimmies - which was the best for meals by a longshot

You wont be disappointed with HOJOs :yay:

This was the exact same thing I was going to say. Tropicana wins my vote over HoJo for the same reasons.

Never stayed at Red Roof and don't remember ever seeing any reviews of it.

To me, Hojos is not a walk to DL - its a shuttle. You do enough walking around the park. I would say the Tropicana because it is a 2 min walk to the gate!

While it's not on your list and even though we're locals, we did stay at the Candy Cane Inn when DW did the DLR 1/2 Marathon. The rooms are quite nice and it's very close to the entrance plaza.

Red Roof Inn would not be considered walking distance for most people (including me). We've stayed at HoJo several times, and the walk is not a problem at all for us. We do like the room layout and the balcony with a view of the fireworks in the Premium Disney view rooms (especially when it's available at the Entertainment card rate!). I will say that this would be a long walk for children under the age of about 8 (but we've always had ours in a stroller under that age). Haven't stayed at Tropicana, so can't comment on it at all.

Red roof is a nice hotel but it is the furthest away about a mile and a 15 minute walk. I have stayed there quite a few times and yes it is walkable but it is not as close as others would like it to be. After a long day in the park and especially if you have little kids the walk seems rather long on the way back.

I've only stayed at HoJo, but we'll stay there again in a heartbeat. We have 2 kiddos, 8 & 3. The 3 y/o sat in an umbrella stroller which we "parked" in the park and got our freebie stroller rental (Disney Visa!). It was a cheap stroller and was only used to get to and from the park. I did not mind the walk at all. It felt just as long as our walk back to the DLH when we missed the monorail.

You can't get much closer than the Tropicana! We stayed there last trip, and the location was great. The rooms were ok, they were clean & the beds were comfortable. I would pass on the free continental breakfast though...it's free, but not worth it! Plus, there was a little kid in there coughing all over everything.

I haven't stayed at the other two places, but I would definitely recommend the Tropicana as a decent place within walking distance.
