Help me choose new cell phone...

But those of us who aren't techie and "get" the apple products love it.

I was even able to fix a software issue on my iPhone. We have Apple computers. I just replaced our PC and it is a brand new PC and it is already driving me BONKERS! I can't figure several things out. I hate it.

Dawn

I loved my itouch and couldn't wait to get the iphone - until I met the Razr. My techie ex convinced me to go with it instead, and I'm so glad. My ma has the iphone, and every time I look at it I'm relieved I got the Razr.

Easy to use, very customizable, and far more attractive. I love love love it. I just got the most recent OS, Ice Cream Sandwich, and it seems like it REALLY extended my battery life.

Things I do on my Razr:

= Watch HD movies - on a screen that dwarfs the iPhone. Doesn't weigh more, though, and is just as comfortable in my hand (and I'm not a big girl).
= Play emulated games - with a playstation 3 controller.
= Hook up my phone to my tv to play games like Angry Birds, or my Nintendo games.
= Navigate with Google maps, which is SO MUCH BETTER than the iPhone's goofy directions app.
= Listen to all my .mp3s without needing to convert them to an iPod format; downloaded the free winamp app and used that as well, which I use on my computer and like best.
= All the apps you can get for iPhone are mostly on the Razr as well (plus different ones); I have a ton of them!
= Ask my phone questions ("Where is the nearest Chik-fil-a?" "Where is the cheapest gas around here?" "Navigate me to Jewel-Osco") and get answers.
= my expandable memory puts me at 32 gigs. That will handle everything that can be thrown at me.
= pictures, pictures, pictures! My most recent trip to Disney (and my January TR), I only used my Razr and ditched my digital. Worked out great for me. And I can take HD video as well, very clean clear and crisp.

I can play music all day at work or maybe have a movie going, and then make calls, use the browser, play games, and end up with my battery lasting the FULL day (7 a.m. to 11 p.m.).

Walmart has the 4S Iphones on sale for $148 w/2 year agreement for all carriers. They sent me an email today about the sale.

Personally, I'd wait for the iPhone5, which will be released on September 21. (The exact date is a rumor, but it's a substantiated rumor. :) )

I've been in the same boat, trying to decide between the Galaxy and the iPhone. Most of my friends have iPhones and are trying to convince me to go with them. And then I remember most of my friends are on their second or third iPhone because they've either had problems, they've broken them, or their batteries go.

I tend to be brand loyal, my last two phones have been Samsung, my mp3 is also Samsung. And they've all served me well. A friend of mine has had the first generation Galaxy for a good long while, never had an issue. And keep in mind, it's a bigger screen than the iPhone. I hear the iPhone 5 is going to be larger, but that was just speculation I think.

Personally? I'm just depressed about having to pay another $50 bucks on top of what I already pay to get data and whatnot. That's concerning more than which phone to pick lol

I just got a smart phone this summer... here's my story:
Work provides me with a phone. In June my old one (sprint/nextel Mortorola non-smart flip phone) stopped recieveing calls and my boss told me to go to the sprint store and get a phone that had reliable reception. I ended up with a choice between Iphone 4/4S or a Motorola Photon (Android phone) on the Sprint network. Got the photon because my purchasing guy wouldn't approve applecare insurance (which was $100 up front for 2 years, but was ok to pay $8/month for 2 years, which equaled almost double applecare. Oh well...). So, got it, took me a while to get used to it, but I did.

Fast forward to a month later... all our company's cell phones (45 mobile phone lines) wouldn't recieve calls. Sprint/Nextel said they were "retuning Nextel's Towers" which would be obsolete in January, as they are phasing out Nextel. So, we tried other phones from them, and none worked in all locations of our employees. So, we decided to switch providers to Verizon.

So, my boss said he could chose between Motorola Razor or iPhone for managers (my level). So, he got iphone 4's for us all, as we could get accessories and such pretty much anywhere. I was all excited to finally have an iphone. I got it and I hate it. I miss my android SOOOO much! Nothing is intuative, to me, anyway. I hate that it takes so many steps to silence my phone at night, when with the Droid, I just set the silent hours one time and it did it every night automatically, and turned sounds back on in the morning.

Things i miss from my Droid:
  • silent hours
  • custom ringtones for free - I could literally download it and set it as a ringtone. On the iphone, I have to go through itunes, if it's even the specific file format.
  • not having to sync my phone via itunes or icloud (icloud doesn't even let you sync fully, so if you want a true backup and customability, like adding custom tones, you have no choice but itunes)
  • Itunes is hard to control... if you have it on one machine, and you try to sync to another (which we've had to do when the one machine broke) it creates all sorts of problems.
  • having a separation between my work life and my personal life on my phone
  • having separate contacts in my phone - work, personal email contacts, phone contacts. on Iphone, they're all in one list.
  • the ability to start typing someone's phone number and it'll bring up people who fit that... I have to start typing names on the iphone, and it's just not safe to do while driving. So, now I pretty much only initiate calls while at a light, which sucks.
  • the big screen on my droid. The iphone is so small and fragile. I never even had any kind of case on my droid, dropped it, off the counter a couple times, it was unscathed. This thing... the phone guy scratched it when he was putting the case on!
  • the BACK button. I HATE only having one button on the iphone. Every app has a back button, but they're all in different places. I miss having the home, back, menu, and search buttons all the time.
  • having to close apps. really. it's annoying.
  • calendars. droid just showed my google calendars better. the iphone only lets me see a few days at a time, where the droid - I could see a week at a time and i could read it all. And right now, my iphone won't display all 4 of my google calendars although I've told it to over and over and over again.

Things I like about the iphone:
  • accessories are everywhere. I can probably buy an iphone accessory, (charger, case, screen protector) at the freaking gas station! I know for sure that Meijer, target, etc. will have a large selction. And if someone makes a cell phone case, 99% of the time, it's for the iphone, and iphone only.
  • apps - they seem more reliable/better developed than Droid apps. More professional. But less of them are free.
  • camera - it's pretty nice in that I can chose my focal point. Don't get my wrong, the Photon had a nice camera too, with higher resolution, but the iphone camera, although less megapixels/resolution, just takes better pictures. the flash is better too, for sure.
  • Facetime. I have yet to use it, but I like that I'll be able to 3-way "skype" with my sister and parents, since they all have iphones, for free. We had Skype before but we could only talk to one other party at a time for free.
  • organizations of apps - I like the little folders I can categorize my apps in. On my droid, I had different screens for different uses, such as games, work stuff, Disney stuff (yes, I had a whole screen of Disney apps, and now I have a square folder thing-y of them).
  • it's commonality - because the iphone is so common, if I don't know how to do something, I can generally find out by asking someone else who's had one for a while, or I can always ask at the geek bar or whatever it's called at the apple store.
and for me, this is telling... at both the Sprint store and the Verizon store... all their employees and managers carried Droids. When I asked them if they had iphones, they all said that yes, they had tried them, but liked Droids better, even though they had to pay for them, and they cost the same as iphones.

good luck with your decision. I wish I could go back in time and convince my boss to have gotten us Droids. I was fooled by the popularity of Iphone, but in reality, the Droid would have been a better fit for me.

Sorry so long-winded, but I hope my experience helps shed some light on your decision.

Thank you everyone! All these new suggestions have me at square one. :rotfl2: Since I am not in a rush (I do like my current phone, an LG android) I will wait until the Iphone 5 comes out and will take it from there.

Having a Samsung myself, I'd definitely go with the iPhone. Two things that really annoy me with my phone right now-- it's constantly freezing up and I have to pop out the battery at least once a week. And, it takes really crappy pictures. My sister's iPhone takes awesome ones. I usually drool with jealousy when she's around.

I thought I would throw my opinion in the mix - I got the LG Spectrum a few months ago, and the big HD screen is awesome but the sound quality SUCKS when I'm trying to have an actual phone conversation. It's not just my phone, my husband has the same issue. However, that big ol' screen is keeping me happy right now, because I don't use my phone as a phone that much.

I think Iphone vs. Android is completely subjective. I truly tried, more than once, to fall in love with Apple products and have not. I didn't find them to be intuitive for me at all. My sons love theirs.

My upgrade through AT&T has been available for months. I just can't really decide if I want to sign a new 2 year contract for any phone they are currently offering. I have a Blackberry Torch and love it. It's taken a beating and keeps on going.

My husband has an iPhone through his work and he seems to like it.....we've had a few Samsungs and know that we don't want another one of those.

I'll have to read over your replies in detail and figure out if I want to finally take the plunge for an iPhone LOL

I have a Samsung Infuse and I love it. This is my first foray into the world of smartphones - the guy at best buy had to show me how to turn it on, but it was easy to play with from then on. Personally I didn't want an Iphone because I have found the apple products so proprietary that you have to be all apple or no apple. For people who love apple, that's great but for someone like me who likes a little of this and a little of that, I'm not a fan. I like my PC, my sansa fuze mp3 player, and my android phone :)

My children love playing with the huge screened Infuse, which is one of the reasons why I chose it. A friend of mine has an iphone and just the other day was telling me how much she hates it and wishes she hadn't gotten it. :rolleyes1

I think you have to play around with them, and know what you're looking for. I was looking for a phone that could entertain the children and that I could access my email on. Super pleased, and there is a good chance I would continue with Samsung when it's time to upgrade. I have had to pop the battery a few times, but I don't mind.

My sons and I are all on the family plan with AT&T and we haven't bought a phone in 8 years but upgrade every 2 years. Best Buy has such great prices, that they can do because of the quantity sold. You might find the exact phone you want for free or really cheap.
Go to Best buy and check out what they have for free. My son is waiting for a few weeks because he was told by one of the salepeople that when the Iphone 5 comes out they will have the 4S for $49.00. He will definately pay that. My other son got the same phone a few months ago at Best Buy for free because he is in the military and the Best buy in GA offered good deals for the guys who just graduated boot camp.
I have an android HTC and love it but would love to have "Siri" that phone is so cool (4S). My phone is only 8 megapixel camera so the photos are not as good as some other phones I have seeen.
My third son is going tomorrow to get the android with the 12 megapixel camera since his upgrade is now. They are free with 2 year contract.
So check out Best Buy and see what they have first before signing with Verizon where you will be paying full price.

I have had the Samsung Galaxy S (1st one) for 2 years now and I really do like it. A friend at work has the new III and it seems like an awesome phone. I am however an apple girl so I just pre-ordered the iphone5 and I'm hoping that I don't hate it like some of the stories I've read here. DH and 2 of my DDs have the 4 and 4S so I have played with it and I have to say that the android is definetely more sophisticated. One of the things about the iPhone that you hear a lot is how user friendly it is, well I think that's true but it is also more simplistic to use which can be a negative. The android can be more complicated to get used to but better once you get it down.
Good Luck!! I think they are both good and I'm sure you will end up with a great new phone.

I'm not going to try to sway you either way, however DH and I have droids - and we love ours. Our carrier is TMobile, and to be totally honest, if they offered an IPhone when we upgraded to "smartphones" last year, I probably would have went with one since we have IPods and the kids have ITouches, and those are super. We purchased HTC Glacier phones and over the course of the last 14 months, I have only had to remove my battery once because the screen froze - my DH (same model) has never had to remove the battery on his.

There was definitely a learning curve to the Droids, and I'm no techie, but it was very easy to learn - even without referring to the on-phone manual app. I thought I would miss my ITunes (that I have on my PC and laptop), and really think Apple should get with the program and offer an android ITunes app, but since they don't - they are losing money on songs from me. Amazon has an awesome app for songs that can VERY EASILY be transferred from phone to PC, and then played in ITunes - and many are cheaper than on ITunes. I think the Siri feature would be super - but think the Android OS will come up with something like it in the future. I use my phone as a mini-computer, read on it (Amazon Kindle), print pics from the phone to CVS, play games against my sister who lives on the opposite coast, and random people who live all over the place, play songs through Pandora and Amazon through the Bluetooth player in my car, talk-to-text, swipe-to-text, heck - sometimes I even make a call on it, LOL

I'm really glad that we were not able to get IPhones when we upgraded last year, because we never would have known how great a Droid was. I definitely won't be lining up to buy an IPhone 5 (or 4, 3,2,1,) anytime soon. Both of my kids will be getting new phones for Christmas as they have outgrown our hand-me-downs, and both will be getting Droids.

I ended up getting the Samsung Galaxy 3, got a good deal at Sam's Club for $148 with my two year contract extension. Yes, there's a bit of a learning curve, but that's mostly because I had never had a smartphone before. But I'm very happy with it thus far. The screen is fantastic, large but not too huge, and the battery life isn't too shabby. With fairly light use, I can go two days without having to charge it. Of course the more apps you use, the more it's going to drain. Perfect way to solve that is an app killer, and then the battery life is even better.

One thing I found very interesting. When conversing with the guy who was getting me all set up, I asked him so basic questions about his opinion regarding the Android platform vs the iPhone. He said he'd never go for an iPhone over a Droid. He was emphatic about that. And this is a guy that sells both phones, and works with both phones. I already had made my mind up about going with the Galaxy, but his comments just helped solidify that for me.

If you are gonna spend the money and get into a contract, might as well wait til the iPhone 5 comes out next month. I am sure it will be great.

Another cool thing about the iPhones... other than the fact they are Apple and that makes them nice and user friendly already is the fact it will easy to find accessories and stuff.

I have heard however the adapter cable size is probably going to change, which will render the old cords and adapters useless. I am sure it will not take long for a new set of stuff that is "iPhone 5 friendly" to become available.

Yeah, but in Samsung and LG's defense, they use the "Micro USB" for both data link/recharging (Unlike Apple's proprietary devices, the Micro USB is the most common adapter in the world -- bet you have one or two lying-around the house).

That's my big criticism of Apple -- they stick you with this manufacturer-unique power/data cord and force you to buy all these aftermarket accessories, and now, with the release of the iPhone 5, you have to "adapt" to a new generation of cords...
