Help me choose a new car

We had a 2010 Ford Escape, it got totalled. (by an idiot on a cell phone who ran a red light). We get our settlement this week. I need to buy a new car and I just don't like anything.

So far we've looked at the Ford Edge, another Escape, the Kia Sorento and Sportage, the Honda Cr-V and the Toyota Rav 4. I liked the Rav the best but we didn't drive it yet and the back door is odd. We liked the Equinox when we were looking back in the spring but they are still very scarce.

I think we need to look at a car... we had a Pontiac G6 that we loved but it was a lease...that's how we ended up with the Escape.

Tell me about your car and why you love it. My requirements - good safety rating, good mpg, lots of legroom for 6'4" DH as well as legroom in the back seat for growing teen boys, seats 5, and under $24K. Oh and it has to be cute. (read not an old persons car).

That was my original thought...but I just can't. We looked at them and it just didn't "feel" right. I can't explain it except to say I am a gut instinct kind of person and considering another Escape just felt really wrong.

I just had to get some things fixed on my car and I debated whether or not it was time to get a new one and this would have been the first car I test drove. I am going to wait another year to get a new car and this is at the top of my list. I like the way they look and the reviews are pretty good.

I know I will get flamed for this but, please buy American. I was laid off for 8 months and thought I'd never got back to work. But the "Cash for clunker" program brought back the American auto industry and put me back to work. (I work in a steel mill suppling the auto industry). I know it's your money and you can spend it as you please, but, the American economy revolves around the American auto industry, so please, if all things are equal, buy from one of the big three.

Since you asked about cars, we have owned 5 Chrysler/Dodge minivans with great satisfaction and reliability. We would buy another one if we weren't so close to retirement.

DH is 6'4" and he's been looking at the Chevy Traverse. He drives a Chrysler Pacifica now which he loves, but they don't make them anymore.

I bought a Chevy Equinox this past June and I am very happy with my choice. Runs well, I like the dash, spacious enough ( I'm 6 ft) and we got it for 23,500 before taxes, doc fee, etc.

Toyota and Honda are built in plants in the U.S.

I currently have an 2010 Edge and love it. I had an Equinox and in a 20mph accident(where every other car involved drove away, chain reaction crash) the Equinox fell apart and was totalled. It spent more time in the shop, prior to the accident, than on the road. Multiple recalls and MANY other known problems that were never officially recalled. Brake rotors(defective x2), rear door lift, struts(x3), water in the spare tire well(they never figured that out) etc.....Never Chevy again!

I feel like a broken record, but we have a Traverse and I love it.

Our last 4 cars have been GM (chevy) and I'd definitely buy GM again.

Sorry to hear about your Escape. I think you really had the cream of the crop with the Escape, sorry you aren't comfortable with another.

We have 6 at work, 4 hybrids and 2 4 cylinder non-hybrids. They drive nice and are really well laid out. We have 2 more 4 cylinder non-hybrids on the way. Corporate didn't want to buy more cars this year, but 2 of our Explorers hit 300k miles....50k miles more than corporate wants us keeping cars, so it kind of forced their hand.

Mustang, and I love it because it just feels nice. Obviously that won't work for you with a large family.

I really like the new explorer, the edge and the escape.

We also have an xterra which I like well enough but the back doors are shaped funny and turn me off of the car. Maybe a murano?

My friend also has a subaru that I really like.

I really love love LOVE the lexus suv.

The Hyundai Elentra Touring, it has more room than the Nissan Murano, Kia Sportage, and Hyundai Tucson and its more than $5,000 cheaper than any of the other ones.

What year was your Equinox ? They really reinvented the 2010 model and it has been very popular. I wouldn't have bought one before, never appealed to me. The 2010 has tested well in the safety tests.

I have a Nissan Murano and totally love it! The Rogue is pretty nice.. a little more compact than the Murano.

I really like the Toyota Highlander.. that is what my mother has and she loves it.

My parents used to have a CR-V.. but the cup holders were AWFUL... not deep enough cups would go flying right out of them! Last time she checked they still had not updated the CR-V cupholders. BUT we love Honda's they are pretty great vehicles!

Keep those ideas coming....I had never considered a Rogue and it is cute. THe Highlander is nice but a bit out of our price point.
