I'm in search of a book for my upcoming "guest apperance" :goodvibes in my son's first grade class. I would love suggestions.

I was thinking of Sylvester and the Magic Pebble but thought it might be a bit too 'young'.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

TIA

If you are going in before Halloween, "The Little Old Who Was Not Afraid of Anything" by Linda Williams is a really fun book that my children love.

I teach K-3 library media in one of our public schools and some of the first grade hits have been Dirty Joe The Pirate and My Life With The Wave. Hope this helps

I like The Napping House. Or, how about The Giving Tree (although I can't read that one without crying!).

Hi there! If you love to be animated and do voices when you're reading, this adds something special to the following books:

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems
Lightning Larry (Don't remember the title)
Skippyjon Jones (mentioned by a PP)

Take it from a former preschool and current elementary teacher, the kids absolutely LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE these books. And, again, I can't stress enough how much kids love it if you ham it up. Good luck; I'm subscribing so I can hear how well it went and what book you chose!

My favorite to read to kids is The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. I've read it to Kinders and they enjoy it.

All of those mentioned above, plus...

Ruby the Copycat

Chrysanthemum (or any Kevin Henkes)

Paper Bag Princess (Robert Munsch)

Kids love to be read to, you will be a hit with whatever you choose.

I love "Giraffes Can't Dance." I think this is a good book to "ham it up" and really use expression to keep their attention, and not too long to lose it either! :) I love the illustrations as well.

Some of DS' first-grade favorites (he's in 2nd now) were:

The Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson
Click, Clack, Moo, Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin
Giggle, Giggle, Quack by Doreen Cronin
Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin

I don't know where my copy of Sylvester and the Magic Pebble is (I used to love that one when I was young), but I bet DS would have liked that one, too.

Side note:goodvibes - If you are not used to reading to a group of kids, practice reading w/expression and voices many times. It will help you to feel comfotable and will really draw the kids into the story.

:thumbsup2 Praises to you for being an involved parent!:thumbsup2

How about-"Couldy With a Chance of Meatballs" always a favorite at our house.

Maybe find out what they are learning about right now and try to pick a book that fits into that. DS 2nd grade is learning about the Colonial Times so his teacher is reading the American Girl Book that fits in that time period.

I think you've received a lot of great suggestions, but I also like your original one. I don't think your choice is too young at all.

I would also suggest Dr De Soto, The Amazing Bone, or The Sneetches (or any Dr Seuss).

My DH read the Amazing Bone to DD's 2nd grade class and it was a huge hit!
