Help me attach a chord to my lens cover so I don't lose it...

My new Sigma 18-125 that we got to use on our new Pentax istDL does not have a string or chord or anything that we can use to secure it to the camera body when we have the lens cover off. So I'm worried that we'll lose the lens cap at some point by dropping it or forgetting it after setting it down somewhere other than our camera bag, etc.

I would like to attach a string to it that we can clip onto the hook for that purpose that is on the camera body, but I don't want to screw up and damage the lens, camera, or lens cap.

Anyone have any advise from doing this in the past? Things to watch out for? I read the thread about the guy who superglued the lenscap onto the lens, and I certainly don't want to do that!!!

I have one of these on each of my lens caps. If I'm feeling extra responsible I take it off, otherwise I leave it on (unless I'm using the hood). You can get them at most camera supply stores (about the only thing I buy from Ritz).

In lens cap-related news: I was bummed to discover that the special "Mickey" lens cap that I bought at WDW a few years ago for my Canon film SLR doesn't fit my Pentax digital lens.

I never cease to be amazed at the people I see walking around the parks with SLRs and NO LENS CAP. They have the filter on, I guess -- but isn't that just asking for trouble? Or, at least, dust and scratches??

I have the same problem with the 72mm low profile PF for my canon 28-135.
The filter has no threads on the front so a standard lens cap will not work. The filter came with a lans cap but it is rubber that grips the outside of the filter. ANd it does not grip too firmly. The slightest bump and the filter falls off.

That would be me!
Dust? Yep. Scratches? None yet (in more than 4 years). No filter either, unless it's a polarizer which I usually use if there is enough light.
I always have the lens hood on and it protects the lens from any direct contact with hard objects.

The lens cap stays in my pocket most of the day. As much as I use the camera the lens cap would be worn out by now if I were always taking it on and off.

i've always just taken the lens cap from camera to my pocketI f i happen no9t to have apoicket i put it in the bag). i lost one yrs ago but haven't since...( so i know you can get replacement caps, i was buying a circular polarizer filter and asked if they had any, they gave me an old one for nothing but it works fine) I've never gotten scrapes or anything either although i alwasy do use a uv filter...but no scratches on the filters either

although if shipping is cheap at b& h 1.95 is pretty cheap

There's a reason for that - you can;t take a picture through the lens cap.

When I have my camera around my neck, it's there for a reason - to take pictures. I shoot when the mood strikes me; sometimes I go 30 minutes between shots, sometimes I can't go 10 seconds. But when something appears and I want to take a shot, there's no way I can wait to get the lens cap off and boot up the camera. I leave the camera on (it goes into sleep mode after 2 or 3 minutes), and the lens cap off.

I have a UV filter that protects the lens glass. It does get dirty sometimes, but so far I have not had it scratched.

I use those cap keepers and they're terrific. A cheap little investment that saves your lens cap and keeps it close by when you're shooting. I leave the cap off, dangling on the string of the cap keeper when I'm actively shooting. When I'm between racing sessions (usually no more than an hour or so), I put the lens cap back on. Also put it on if I'm walking through crowds for any reason. If I'm not actively shooting, I turn the lens hood around and re-attach it to the lens (in its storage position), then put the cap back on, to protect both the lens and the hood from accidental damage. I can reassemble the whole deal extremely quickly, if needed.

I have no idea But I'll be looking for a replacement when I'm there next week.

Weird thing: the lens cap shows Mickey smiling and saying "Say Mickey!" And I look at that and think: "Wouldn't he really be saying 'Say Cheese'? He's a mouse, for cryin' out loud!!"

We picked up a Mickey lenscap at the camera store (Kodak?) at MK a few years back, simply b/c we had lost the Minolta cap that was on the lens. I think they had several sizes, but not sure if 77 is one of them...that's a pretty large filter size...

I know, but both my main lenses are 77mm. The cost of the filter is also an arm and a leg

Very nice photos but you should rename the galleries. I only saw three shots of a car moving. The rest were all glamour shots of the drivers.

Good lord, if you knew how many people have said that sort of thing to me and been serious...

Won't be at the US Grand Prix. Never been to an F1 race. I understand it's next to impossible to get credentialed. My next event is CCWS at San Jose, end of July. I have shots from Long Beach and Portland, but just haven't put enough time into getting them done and up on the website. Soon, though...

Unfortunately not The largest I've ever seen in my searchings has been a 52mm.

I'd love to get my hands on a 72 or 77mm, but sadly I don't believe they exsist.

I read a tip over DPreview board that someone attachs velcro to their lens cap and camera strap, when the cap is off, just stick it on the velcro on strap. I thought it was a good idea but my op/tech strap is too thin for velcro. Then I came across some plastic paperclip my daughter has, I use 3M mounting strips to stick the clip onto the lens cap, when the cap comes off, I just clip it to my camera strap.

Been at a few outings, hasn't fallen off yet..

hmmmm so why did i post on this thread saying i've only lost one in many years???? i somehow lost a lens cap between my living room and study( like they connect by 1 door and are maybe 3 feet away) and have not found it yet 3 days later...wish i had tried that superglue technique
