We recently moved in with a roommate and it am sad to say our dogs are not getting along well here. They are pretty loud at night (mostly because I think it's a new enviroment) and they have not taken to her boyfriend well. We can't possibly move and again and even if we did it would have to be to an apartment and these are large dogs so that just would not work. I'm torn!

My fiance' and I talked today and agreed that we should find a better home for them. :guilty: I refuse to take them to the Humane Society here as when you walk in the door the first thing thats thrown in your face is the tally board of how many thousand animals they've put to sleep this year. So I'm looking for a no-kill shelter or rescue group in our area but haven't found out yet. Any locals know of one?

ETA: We have a golden lab and a St. Benard/Setter mix.

I would suggest doing a google search for specific breed rescues. With the mixes you have, you have four different rescues you can try. Most rescue groups will take in mixes and they will either foster them or find a no-kill shelter for them until they can be adopted. Even if you can't find one that is necessarily close to you, often the groups have volunteers nearby who can help.

I just have to ask...what are they doing that they are so loud at night? Are they fighting? Have you tried just keeping them separated at night or while you are not at home? Have you considered crating one (or both) of them? What are they like when you are home? Do they fight all the time? How long ago did you all move in together? It might just take a little more time, and training, and work, and patience to make sure you can all live together peacefully.

Try this place:

I don't know anything about them but they look like they could help out.

Try Petco. They adopt out animals on the weekends (at least the one in the Walmart complex in Viera does). Also, place a free ad on Pet Finders. I have found homes for a few abandoned animals that way.

Your best bet is to place them yourself if possible. When we had the 2 rescue kittens last spring, I couldn't find any group to help us place them :( I could have taken them to Aloha, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to go that route. We did end up finding them homes, but it took a lot of legwork on our part. No way would I have taken them to the humane society...we would have kept them ourselves before we would have done that. I had to go there to pick up the trap that we used to catch the kittens in the first place, and I saw that awful tally board :(

Pet rescues would be the way to go. I agree that Petco would be a good place to look, especially on saturdays.

The Petco/Petsmart rescue group people were really nice, but they weren't taking any more animals when I called them to ask about the kittens :( I guess that there are just a real lot of animals here that really need homes :( Maybe you could offer to keep the dogs and just bring them to the adoption weekends if they'd let you, though. Is it urgent for you to place the dogs immediately?

Can you get them crates to sleep in at night?

Dogs are easier I think.

Kitties populate at a much much faster rate--and everyone wants a kitten. So they tend to hold their rescues for a much longer period.

I know a retriever rescue group that will gladly take the golden. They will even pick up. They are somewhere off of I-4 before Orlando and Tampa. Very nice couple. YOu do have to pay a surrender fee and once the animal is surrendered..you will NEVER get it back. So be careful.
