Help lice in our school

EWWW .... gross. I'm so glad my kids go to private schools where this kind of thing doesn't happen. Sorry it's happened to your kids.

This is hilarious. Sadly, it's also a common misconception - many people still believe that only dirty, unkempt children get lice. You might try educating yourself about the subject.

I had it when I was in the 5th grade.
IT WAS HORRIBLE!!!!!
We kept shampooing and everything and using the killing medication.
Did not work.
But I moved a few months later and once I moved, we used the medication again and they went away FOR GOOD! :worship:
Turns out my neighbor who I slept over at alot had them and that made me keep getting them.

I actually just dealt with this in the pharmacy. This is now some oll label use of the antibiotic Bactrim to treat lice. Some doctors won't prescribe it for lice but I think it would save a lot of money, time and self esteem.

Just be glad you don't live in our school district. They will no longer notify other parents if a student has lice, it is against school policy for the teachers to say anything about a lice outbreak! At least at our private school the school nurse will notify the whole school that a student (unidentified) has lice, so the rest of us can be on the offensive. Imagine being in a school where you have no idea of an outbreak, until parents start talking! Unbelievably bad policy.

UH, excuse me? Lice don't care about incomes, financial status, private, or public schools.Lice isn't because of poor hygeine either...:goodvibes

Well mine do go to private school and they still managed to have an outbreak of head lice there a few years ago.

I guess the lice forgot to read the financial statements of the families!

I was sooo freaked out - luckily we caught it early. Ds didn't have any, and the girls only had one or two nits in their whole head. I cleaned, washed and vaccumed for days. We did use Nix (two applications), kept their hair in braids or buns, stuffed animals were in trashbags in the garage for a month and I bought all new pillows. I was exhausted. I also spent a fortune having everything that couldn't be washed in hot water dry cleaned. It was worth it though - I know some people who have had real horror stories with being re-infested despite their best efforts.

Surely she was joking - Nobody is that stupid.

Knock on wood we've never had to deal with lice. My 1st grader was taken for a haircut by his Dad last Friday and came home with a buzz cut (I was not happy) Anyway, he comes home from school Monday all excited because the nurse was checking heads for lice and he said it only took a second on him. Made me laugh.

Well EXCUSE ME!
I never meant to hurt anyone's feelings or step on toes but in the 15 years that my kids have gone to their private school, I've never heard of one single incident of lice. If there was, they certainly kept it a major secret. That is all I meant by my comment. I'm very grateful for never having to deal with it and hope that I don't never have to. And I truly am sorry for anyone that has to deal with it. I'm not stupid and certainly not ignorant to this subject, just have never had to deal with it.

Take care~

I think the way you worded your statement was what set some people off. However, I'm surprised how some of you jumped all over her without knowing her true intent. Calling her ignorant and stupid was uncalled for IMO.

I called her STATEMENT ignorant. Big difference.

We had a prinicpal at our private shcool who didnt like to "sound the alarm" say if only one student had it, it was only when several kids got it that she eventually got a letter home.

It is also one of those things, from what I have read, that go unreported, if the family can find it say over the weekend, people use to be embarrassed and there was the misconception that only "dirty" kids got it. Which we all know NOW is not true.

Sorry but that poster came off sounding very wrong, She should be lucky that her kids have never gotten in 15 years vs thinking they were some how immune bc they went to a private school, my kids go to private school and they are boys (and from what you can see the lice do seem to like girls better) but just bc they go to private shcool and are boys I am in no way ignorant to the fact that they are just as vulnerable as every other child out there.

In the 12 years I went to public school, I never caught lice either, nor did anyone else in my family, or in my husband's (also public-schooled) family. But that's not the point.

The point is that your statement was, in fact, ignorant. Ignorant doesn't mean "stupid," it means "uninformed." Your statement about children in private school not catching lice was a textbook example of being "uninformed" and therefore ignorant.

And yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they kept it a major secret at your kid's school. I know I would, if I were dealing with prejudice based on ignorance.

Well said, tlb! I am fervently trying to refrain from replying...don't need the points right now!

Oh please!

I've already said that my first statement was misconstrued. What else do you guys want from me? Geesh!

I don't think it was technically misconstrued, since that would mean we read it wrong. You were simply misinformed. I think we all understand that you were mistaken, and you understand now (I assume?) that lice do not select their victims based on socioeconomic status. So we're all good. :)

Being ignorant of a subject means you know nothing about it. Your post was ignorant, and rude on top. Not misconstrued.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. DD got it from her schools day camp. We found a couple of nits last night and went nuts on it all. So hopefully we can nip this in the bud and move on. I am so thankful she has fine thin hair, my sympathies to kids with thick hair. She cried just doing her hair and it wasnt bad.

I went to school with the 3 children of a struggling single dad whose wife walked out and left him with the kids and no real experience being the hands on parent.Suffice to say, lice were a "couple times a year" thing until a couple mothers figured out the infestation source and went over to "help out" with his girls.

If your girl has long hair, put it up. Reiterate the "no sharing" rule for clothes, combs, hats, etc. Have her keep her sweater inside her backpack rather than hanging next to (and possibly in contact with) other people's.

Pray a lot. Try not to cry if she gets them. :)

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but my dd is b-racial and got it last year. OMG we battled those suckers for 3 weeks. Her hair is very thick and very curly so the knit combs were impossible, I had to just hand pick them one at a time.

But this year, once winter hits we will be putting a small amount of pink oil moisturizing lotion in her hair. Her hair really doesn't need this, but supposedly the lice don't like that stuff so they stay away. Once I started using it last year she didn't have any further problems.

I have thought this since I read the title of this thread in February:

No, I will not help the lice in your school!

I'm sorry, every time I see this thread I think that.

We are lucky to never have had to deal with it yet (knocking on wood). Hugs to all those who have.
