We leave in one week, and one member of our group just injured her knee. We are not sure how bad or to what extent she will be mobile. The earliest the Dr. could schedule an MRI is two days before we leave. Right now she has been told no walking or driving and that she will possibly need surgery. At this late date, rescheduling the trip is really out of the picture.

We are going to Universal, Sea World, and Busch Gardens this trip, and are staying off site. We will have a large SUV, so I think a foldable scooter will fit in the back. From what I can tell, we will be better off to rent from a company than from the parks.

Any advice on who to rent from, what kind to get, charging, transporting, queue lines, etc. would be appreciated. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed here. Less than a week to go, super busy at work and at home trying to get ready, and now I have to get this to get figured out and reserved, with no time to really look into it.

Thanks

I suggest you check out the disAbilities FAQ sticky near the top of this forum. Recommendations of off-site vendors are there; you probably don't need to worry about preferred or non-preferred since you are staying off-site, and the "preferred" status may not necessarily indicate "better" than a non-preferred vendor. When you call to reserve the ECV, you'll need to tell them you want something to fit in your SUV.

One note, you don't mention the demographics of your party, or in particular the injured person... but the ECV user must be at least 18 years old. You will need her weight to reserve the appropriate ECV, so she may prefer to do this herself. If the person with the injury is your minor child, a wheelchair (possibly pediatric size) is really your only option.

Enjoy your vacation!

Thanks. Check the sticky! I feel really silly now. In all the chaos of the last few days (ice storms, hospital trips, knee injuries) I did a search of the disability thread, but completely forgot about checking the sticky for a list of places to rent from.

Yes, this is an adult. I'd say average size, no weight issues. No other health problems. And she is capable of moving in and out of the scooter or a seat without help. She can move around on crutches as well if she has to. We aren't sure yet what kind of brace or cast she may in though. I'm worried they may want to immobilize the whole leg if the injury turns out as bad as the first Dr. thinks it may be.

Good luck! I hope it's not as serious as worst-case-scenarios we all tend to imagine until results are back.

Enjoy your vacation!
