DH called me at lunch today and asked me to make him a doctor's appt. Doc wants him to go for an MRI and says surgery may be required. He gave him a script for naporsyn(sp?) and said it was non-drowsy and shouldn't interfere with our trip. Does anyone know if there is any creme that could help my dh w/ pain if he has it on trip? Is naporsyn don-drowsy? What is water on the knee and what causes it? So many questions!! I'd be so grateful for any input at all.

Thanks,
Cheryl

Naprosyn is the same as Aleve. It is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug in the same family as ibuprophen (motrin, advil). It will not make him sleepy but he should eat before taking as it may be hard on his tummy.

If the pain is too much maybe he could rent a scooter. I do that and it makes the trip so much more pleasant.

As far as creams, you could try any of the ones on the market. If the doctor is aware you are going to WDW and has not told him to stay off the knee he should be fine.

Oh and water on the knee is worth $200 in the game Operation. Just don't touch the sides. Bzzzz, you blew it Bobby.

Operation, that goofy game for dopey doctors.

Naprosyn is the generic of Naproxen , I have taken Naproxen in the past for my osteo-arthritis and it didn't make me sleepy, however it didn't work very well with me and because the insurance company would not pay for Vioxx unless I tried everything else ( because it was a new medication at the time ) I had to try naproxen.
That one so far has done the trick for me. It's not fun to be walking around with pain in your joints but I think this will work for you . Good luck.

Try the naproxen-- however I was given this for cysts on my ovaries and it didn't touch the pain-- it says right on the info brochure that it can take up to 6 weeks to become fully effective. So if he's not getting relief within a day or so-- stop it and take Motrin-- just don't take both as thats harmful. Not trying to play doctor but if your trip is in a few days he may need some more immediate relief than waiting for the naproxen to build up in his system. Have a great trip!!!

when I get water on my knee I just wipe it off

Cheryl get him a Patella Strap ( not very expensive ) it help me. I had key hole surgery on my knee a few years back and i use my strap if my knee gets a bit sore ( its great )

Ibuprofen 400 or 600mg does the trick - i think Advil has that in it.

Good luck ;)

Thank you so much everybody!! I have Vioxx--maybe if he has pain, this will work better? He has had problems with his knee on and off for at least a year now. Hopefully, it will be more off than on while we're at WDW. We had planned on doing a lot of resort hopping and alot of EPCOT-both which will include a fair amount of cocktail drinking. I would imagine that it is not something you can do while taking either naporsyn or vioxx? Thank you so much everyone for your help. :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

I may be wrong, but I do not believe that there are concerns with taking nsaids and drinking alcohol. Check labels. Vioxx is all right, but ibuprophren is not far behind. Remember that the pharmacy dosage for ibuprophren (motrin) is 600 to 800 mgs. So check with doc about the amount that would be helpful. It is an anti-inflamatory med.

Thanks VH!! I will look for a Patella Strap tonight. I really appreciate your help!

Thanks I_Know_You2! Maybe if it's ok to take Vioxx w/ alcohol and that helps-he will just take that if he needs it.

You guys are all wonderful--so very helpful!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I can't really recommend any particular pain medication, but there are several that would work. As for water on the knee, it's just fluid that collects around and under the kneecap. To have it removed, (***warning for the squeemish, this ain't pretty***) the doc will insert a fairly large needle just under the kneecap, with the plunger on the needle already depressed. Once it's in place, the doc will pull the plunger out, essentially drawing that fluid into the syringe. Quite frankly, it hurts like hades, but only while it's going on. The next day your DH will feel better than he probably has in ages.

I don't know exactly what causes this inflammation, but the times I had to have it removed were all sports related (back in my HS days of playing football). I guess it's a pretty common thing for pro athletes, particularly football and basketball players, as I know several players that have to have the procedure done on a fairly regular basis (Brett Favre had to have it done every week a couple years ago).

Hope any of this helps.

PS....A knee brace is a must for your WDW trip....I never tried a patella strap, but just a cheap little Ace knee brace will do wonders.

I wonder why the doctor didn't just do this yesterday in his office? Do you tink Ishould make another appointment with a different doctor at the practice we got to? Our regular doctor was all booked up yesterday, so we took whoever was available. This doctor recommended a MRI and possibly surgery???

wv, very nice description!

If things get really tough you can always rent a scooter. Have you visid the disABILITIES board?

No I haven't I_Know_You2!
I think I will though, that's a good idea. I can at least get info on scooters just in case. Thanks!

Well, it really depends on what your DH did to damage his knee in the first place. I mean, the inflammation could be a symptom of a larger problem, and an MRI would uncover that. Just from my own experience, I'd say that the MRI is a good idea, but you might want to talk to your regular doc before going through with any kind of surgery (which is the same thing I'd recommend to anybody for any kind of surgery :) ).

Thanks so much wvrevy ! I think the doctor said he thinks it is floating cartiledge? I am going to print out your description and show it to my husband. I really appreciate you taking the time to help.

No problem.....Hope everything works out ok, and enjoy your trip !

I may be wrong, but I do not believe that there are concerns with taking nsaids and drinking alcohol.

Actually, concomitant use of NSAIDs and alcohol can cause increased risk of stomach irritation. One does need to use reasonable caution.
