I need advice. I do a low carb diet and I have low blood sugar. I just started with a cold today and I can tell it is going to include a soar throat and coughing. What do I do? This is the first time I have been sick with a cold since I started eating healthy and I'm not sure what to eat or what medicine to take. I know that cough medicines contain alcohol and high fructose corn syrup, but not how much. What about cough drops? I use to drink OJ when I was sick, but I'm not sure if that is a good idea now. I think I will get some chicken broth at the store tonight. Anyone have any ideas? suggestions? I am mostly worried that I will accidently take in too many carbs and mess up my blood sugar. That on top off a cold would be awful. Any advice would be great! TIA!

I don't do low carbing, so I can't advise you on what to eat etc. Just want to send you some PD :wizard: and best wishes for a speedy recovery :sunny:

I also thought about sugar free jello and popsicles.

Hope you're feeling better soon. :sunny:

Hiya

I was just coming on here to ask for advice for my DBF who is on day 8 of Atkins (well, here in the UK day 8 is just finishing!) and has just got a cold :(

Well I saw this thread and would like to agree, yeah, we got him some sugar free throat pastilles and I hope those will help. I'm also going to look into making him some 'hot lemon drink' which is basically sliced lemons stewed in hot water for a while with a bit of sugar substitute (in this case, normally sugar) and maybe a drop of honey? Our Atkins carb-counting book doesn't tell you anything about honey so I'm gonna have to seek that out somewhere else but I'm hoping that the 'hot lemon drink' will be acceptable to his diet!

So there you go! I wanted to send :hug:s aplenty of behalf of my DBF and myself to you mommyflower and anyone else suffering at this wintery time of year and say Good Luck to all! (and thanks for the advice Lisa, sugar free jelly coming right up!!

Thanks for the PD! I think I will look into the Robitussin and the popsicles sound like a good idea.

I just looked in my carb counter book and it says
Honey: 1 tsp, 1/4 oz is 5.5 carbs
I hope this helps. I hope your DBF feels better soon!:sunny:

Yikes! Thanks for the info mommyflower, looks like there will be no honey in the drink - plenty of lemons, water and s. sub should be pretty nice anyways :)

Make yourself a pot of decaf tea with splenda to soothe your throat. Instead of taking liquid cough and cold syrup, try the Alka Seltzer Cold and Cough medicine that is in tablet form.

I've got a bugger of a cold right now, too. That's what I've been doing.

I thought about chicken broth, too, but haven't needed it. Just watch the labels since all brands are not created carb equal.
