Help in getting a friend a place to stay!?

I have been so used to traveling alone, or with friends and family, on DVC points that I haven't ever needed to look around at the standard resort rates. Now that situation has come up, and I am hoping anyone in the know can help.

I have a friend from out of state who will be coming to Disney in September to meet me up there...I just booked SSR studio from Sep 17-21 today. Both being middle-aged guys who want to enjoy their freedom, he wants to get a room rather than share the studio (and I'm not arguing!). I had told him I knew of some discounts Disney had recently been running for value and moderate resorts...but didn't really have any details on availability. Apparently on such short notice, he found out availability is basically none...all the special rates seem to have been secured.

So my question is - do DVC members have any special discounts in booking hotel rooms for friends or family? Or other DVC studios, if paying cash rather than points? I could conceivably call in any of the following favors for a discount if anyone knows of any - DVC member, annual passholder, Florida resident, Disney Visa holder. The problem is - HE is not any of those things...so can I book and have someone else stay there? Obviously, it would be ideal if he could get into a DVC studio so we're on the same property - but I don't think he'd be keen to pay over $200 a night when he can stay at another Disney resort for a lot less. I don't think he's looking for value only, but the moderate resorts in the $100-150 range are probably the target price (the $96 moderates would have been great had they not all been sold out).

If anyone can help, please do - I'd appreciate any input I can get on the subject, and hopefully soon as he'll need to book in the next day or two.

I was able to book my friend a room at AKV with a DVC discount. I will be staying there at the same time on points. I think it was 25% off rack rate...

That could work, since all the codes seem used up. I wonder if it would apply to moderates too?

DVC members do not get any discount on non-DVC reservations.

I'd suggest you give him 407-WDW-DISNEY and give him some suggestions.

I just checked on the WDW site & if you click special offers on the bottom of the page, you will get a page that says "Great Room Rates for a Magical Disney Getaway, travel select nights between 7/22/09 - 10/3/09" & there was availability for POR, CBR, etc. for $96 per night & the dates you are looking for. I'd say that's a pretty substantial savings off considering the price is $219 per night during the holidays.

That's actually exactly what we were looking for. He had tried with a local travel agent who said she can get the Disney deal, but she told him they were all sold out. Any of the mods would work fine - and POFQ or POR would be even better since I'm at SSR - so there'd be the boat connection to Marketplace that we could use between the two resorts.

No problem! I love finding deals for people. If I could stand people complaining to me when things go wrong, I'd be a travel agent myself! Let us know how he made out.
