My 12 yr old daughter has her 6th grade dance coming up. The theme is the 50's so I want to make her a poodle skirt. I'm not great at sewing but can do a simple stitch. I hope there is someone at there that can tell me how to make this skirt. Thank you so much!! :goodvibes

I'm no expert, but I presme you want to make a full circle skirt with a poodle applique on it? (Like Grease?) What I would do:

Find fabric big enough to cut a full circle (because I can't sew seams straight ) - you might have to buy sheeting or something like that. Draw a big circle on it with tailor's chalk - turn it into a compass by fixin it on one end of a piece of string which will give you the right length waist-hem, Cut it out. Draw a smaller circle (where it will sit on the waist) bigger than your DD needs to get into. Fold over a "hem" of about 1 1/2 inches and fix it down, leaving a gap. thread elastic through. Hem the bottom. See if you can find a picture of a poodle to print onto transfer paper and iron it on, if you're not good at appique. Or cut one out of felt and sew it on.

I'm sure there's people out there who can do better than this, but this has worked for me - you can gather up loads of coloured tulle for the underskirts to overcome any lack of thickness in the top fabric;)

Or I bet there's a pattern you can get complete with poodle:thumbsup2

i made a very simple one - i got some pink felt like material - by the yard at joanns or any fabric store - draw a big circle then a smaller one in the middle for her hips. you can use ribbon for a tie or elastic - made a quick casing (easy - just fold over the fabric and put the ribbon in between or the elastic)
get an appliqué from the fabric store of a poodle and stitch it on or iron it. Then I took some cute sequence ribbon and sewed it to the poodle and up the skirt to make it look like a leach.

Have fun – hope this helps

Thanks to both of you. Your information is extremely helpful and I greatly appreciate it. I am hoping to start the skirt this weekend or Monday at the latest. Than you so much again. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Things have been crazy. I am starting it tomorrow. We came home today and it dawned on me that I need to have the completed by next Saturday. Nothing like waiting for the last minute.

I don't have anything going on this week so hopefully I can pull it off. I will let you know how it turns out.

Thanks for checking. :goodvibes

I just finished making the skirt. All I have left is to get the poodle on it. Unfortunately it isn't iron on so I have some more sewing to do. The skirt was a little harder than I thought. We made the waist too big so I had to make some adjustments. I tried to make it without having to sew but that didn't work. I ended up having to cut one of the sides open and then make a seam with the correct waist measurement. It was still a little big so I made a seam along the top and inserted elastic to bring it in a little more. That worked perfectly. My daughter loves the skirt and cannot wait to wear it on Saturday.

Hopefully I won't have too much trouble getting the poodle on. :rotfl:

Thank you again for all your help. I really appreciate it. :goodvibes
