I know we have talked about this before, but I think my situation is a bit different.

I go to a large salon and day spa to get my hair done. I have had a few regular stylistst but no one person I HAVE to go to. I like to see what different people will do with my hair. Lately I have been seeing one person, we will call her "Sue", and she does an OK job, but I've had to ask her to cut my hair more even a couple of time.

Now I am ready to cut my 10 inches of hair off again for Locks of Love. I just made an appointment with a Senior Stylist who is good at creating new styles, but that isn't Sue. I guess I felt that she was good enough for the trims but not good enough for a big change? That sounds horrible!

So what should I do? I am feeling guilty but I really want my hair done right. It will be a big change for me. I don't know if I would return to Sue after the Big Cut or if I would just see someone else afterwards.

Is Sue going to black list me? Will I never get another good stylist to cut my hair b/c they think I'm not ready for the commitment? Is this really an OK thing to do or am I breaching some salon etiquette that I don't now about?

I've never been able to do the stylist switch successfully. I ended up having to go to a different salon because the original stylist got hissy with me :guilty:. No one should have to pay money for bad hair though so try switching and see how it goes. I'm sure she won't be able to blackball you.

It's so nice that you're donating your hair :goodvibes

A professional stylist should respect your decision to go to someone new. I have been with the same stylist for 18 years but have gone to others at the same salon for a trim if I can't get into my regular. She totally understands and I'm sure she would respect me if I switched to someone else if I liked their methods better. She would probably be glad to get me off her books because she is booked for at least 3 months in advance!!!

Best of luck with your decision and I hope the stylist treats you with respect!

You are doing a wonderful thing, Sonya!!

As a hairdresser, I think it just depends on Sue's personality. She may be the type to get mad and she may not. When I worked in a big salon, I thought of it more as a team and not so much as individuals. We shared a lot of of clients. Truly, I enjoy seeing the people who come back to me time after time because a relationship is developed and you know more about the person;s hair with each cut. Plus, if they move from stylist to stylist, sometimes we cut differently and you are working with someone else's cut from last time (which may or may not be the world's best cut!)

Sorry I can't give you a different answer but I think you are wise to choose someone you really trust with a big change. Sue may be waiting for the day you'll cut your hair into a fun style & may be hurt that she didn't get to be the one to do it. Or she may be more timid about big changes (from you saying you've had to ask her to cut more) and be relieved you chose someone else to do the big change.

I hope it goes well and you like your new do though. I am excited for you!!

I know how you feel. I've seen this before. I use to be a cosmetologist...10 years ago. If you're going to a large salon/spa I would go w/whoever you feel comfortable with. I also now go to a large salon/spa and many times I don't ever see the people that have done my hair in the past. it is like 4 stories high. I would go to the senior stylist and not feel a bit guilty. You pay a lot of $ for a good haircut and that is what you should get. If you aren't 100% satisfied I wouldn't go back to her and go to someone else. in places like that they're usually pretty professional. good luck. I've thought about cutting my hair off too but just can't bring myself to do it...yet.

Thank everyone. You have made me feel better. I've been to Sue about 5 times, she is younger than me but nice, we have kids in common to talk about. The Salon isn't huge but there are several rooms. I have never met the senior stylist but I talked to the woman talking appts. and told her what I wanted to do and she recomended this new woman.

Haven't you already answered your own question? You've already seen a couple of different stylist at the salon and it doesn't sound like anyone has held a grudge against you. If you like the new cut, keep going to that person.

ITA w/you! And, Sonya, if you've used other stylists in the salon, then they all know that you do like to "test drive" the other stylists. Don't worry about it. Just let "Sue" know it's a major change and you wanted to see what another stylist might do w/your hair!

Super for donating your hair to such an amazing cause, Sonya!! :thumbsup2

And another thing, our receptionist had a knack for pairing people up. I have clients from 20 years ago because Wanda thought we'd be a good match! :goodvibes I'd trust the receptionist's judgement!
