My daughter wants a video mp3/mp4 player to use for music, movies and audio books. I have no clue what to purchase and I don't want it to cost a fotune!!! Please help me:confused3

If she wants to be able to view video, your best bet is to start with the new Ipod Nanos. They start at $149 for a 4 gb model and have a decent screen. From there you go to a larger capacity Nano for $199 for 8 gb model.

Then, you go to the Ipod classic, which gives you about 80 gb for around $299. You can also get an 8 gb IPOD touch for about that price. The difference between the two is that the classic has a larger capacity, but a smaller screen and different touch controls.

The Ipod touch has a larger screen and is controlled via touching the screen rather than a menu wheel.

Any of these you get will need to be utilized via Itunes, downloadable from Apple to your PC or Mac.

There are also MP3 players that other manufacturers make besides Apple.

Ipod is an Apple trademark and is utilized with Itunes from Apple.

MP3 players with video, like the Zune and other players, load music and video via a separate process than Itunes.

So, first you should look at MP3 players and decide if you want that or if you want an Ipod.

www.cnet.com is a good place to start to read about these, or go to Circuit City or Best Buy and get one of the sales personnel to explain the differences to you.

Ipod all the way!!
DS(4) has the 4G Nano and DD(10) has the 8G Nano. I can download their shows like Mickey's club House, Hannah Montana, and have all the music, and some movies on it too! It's fantastic. The screen is a great size, it's easy to use(my 4 yo taught me!LOL)and they sell rubber skins to protect it. We also put a screen protecter on theirs. They take them everywhere and it's so helpful for long car trips, on the plane, etc.... We have no problem downloading things from Itunes, it's really simple. We can even convert any movie we have to go in the Ipod too! They really take care of them and it's been worth every penny!

HOw old is your daughter?

We got our 8 and 9 year olds $49 re-furbished IPOD shuffles for Christmas. (Warning: they're TINY-- as in an inch square!!)

We got our teenage babysitter to dowload some music using the Itunes cards we got them, and more from some CDs we got them for Christmas, and they're both in heaven!

I don't know about the video aspect, but we got our daughters (10 and 8) Sansa mp3 players versus IPod, which I have, not only for the cost difference but because of the way they are powered. I have to plug my IPod into the computer to recharge it, while their players are battery operated. They use theirs much more than I use mine, and didn't want them to run out of juice with no way to recharge them. This way, they throw a couple of extra AAA (we use rechargable) batteries into their bags and are set. I don't know how the Video mp3 players by brands other than IPod recharge, but it's something to consider, especially if your daughter will be taking it on trips where you'll be without a computer.

apple dropped the price of the NEW shuffles to $49!

The Ipod Nano"s have a regular charger you can plug into the wall outlet. I also have a charger for my car that they sell. You don't have to charge it on your computer.

As I had never heard of being able to charge an IPod on anything other than the computer, I was curious. You can purchase wall and car adapters for your IPod Nano for about $40 from Best Buy.

My three older kids all have ipod Nanos. I tried getting on of the cheaper versions (not apple) for the younger of the three, but I could not figure it out for the life of me. With the Apple products, all you do is plug it in, and everything is so easy to figure out...unlike other mp3's. It was worth the extra cost for me to not have to stress over something not working LOL.

Anyway, they love having the video, in addition to the music. You have to download videos from iTunes, but they are only a couple bucks. It was definitely a good investment, and they are used constantly! I would highly recommend the Nano for kids. Our kids have the 4 gb (?) and that is plenty of room!
