Help! I broke the TiVo!

It was working fine earlier but now I can't use it to turn the TV off. The batteries in our regular TV remote (the one that came with the TV) are dead and I don't have any more to replace them with at the moment (darn AAAs! ). I've discovered that I cannot mute the TV with the TiVo remote, nor can I do anything except change channel and use the TiVo button to select programs previously recorded.

Anybody know how to fix this darn thing?

Did you maybe hit a button on the regular remote that takes it off TV. I do that all the time.

on occasion our Tivo just "takes a vacation" and doesn't respond to the remote at all. I discovered that if I unplug the thing (can't do this when it is recording of course!) and wait 10-20 seconds and plug it back in it seems to be happy again!!

There is a STANDBY button on the front of your TIVO. Push it and hold for the count of 12. If this doesn't work, try unplugging everything (TV included) and waiting 12 seconds before you plug it all back in.

All universal remotes (and the TiVo remote is just a specialized universal remote) have to be programmed to operate the specific television you have. If the batteries in the remote give out, then it'll forget which television it was programmed to operate. The remote's user manual has instructions for selecting the apporpriate television to operate with the remote.

Well, I don't know what the heck I did to it, but when DH got home, it worked fine for him.
