My DS is in 4th grade and needs to make a 3D Map of Alabama. Not sure how to do it. I was thinking he could draw the state on poster board and glue stuff on it. How do you make rivers and mountains etc?

Any ideas are GREATLY appreciated.

We purchased some fast drying clay for the kids to cover the map with. They could use more clay to shape the mountains with and could carve rivers on the lower parts. Once dried the clay could be painted.

I also suggest using clay to make the shpae of the state and geographic featurs. Then paint them their respected colors. I prefer this idea as you can shape the indentation for the rivers and lakes and add height to the mountains.

If you have a model train shop/hobby shop nearby and don't mind spending the money you could buy certain features and add it to the map.

You can also use that Crayola Model Magic. It dries quickly and is easy to work with.

Another one for Model Magic, it is also lightweight.

Thanks so much for all these ideas. I'll try that model magic. I thought since we have the week off from school he can work on his project.

You may want to use foam board or corregated cardboard for the bast rather than poster paper - that would support the clay better.
