I purchased a Kindle from Craigslist. Well I guess this item was report lost or stolen. I've emailed back and forth to the person and have his phone number but he refuses to give me back my money. He said he got it from someone and he sold it as described. A new Kindle in the box. He said it is my loss.

Is there anything I can do?

I guess you can report it to the police and try and get the jerk arrested as satisfaction.

Geesh.

I guess when you booted it up, it came up stolen or something? Are you not able to use it?

I would go to the police but chances are you are still out of luck, they are going to confiscate the kindle...and then you will have to press charges against the seller to get the money back

Who has the Kindle right now? How do you know it was reported lost or stolen?

I have the Kindle now. I tried to load books on it and it won't. Called them to try to get it fixed. That's when they told me that it was reported lost or stolen. I'm so furious now. I guess I have an expensive dictionary now. That's all I can use it for.

Are you going to contact police? You absolutely should. Maybe the seller knew and maybe he didn't, but they will get to the bottom of it.

I would email the person that you purchased and from and either tell them that you have contacted the police regarding the matter (even if you haven't) or that if he/she doesn't refund your money you will be contacting the police. Once they refund the money and before you return the Kindle to them contact the police for real and then turn the person in.

I'm surprised when you called about not being able to load books on the Kindle they didn't pursue trying to get it from you to return it to the orginal owner. I would think that since they know it is stolen that they have the person's info from it being registered and then reported as stolen.

Regardless of the fact that you can't use it I honestly would feel a little guilty about keeping it knowing that it was stolen.

I would call the police and report it. When he's looking at charges for receiving stolen property and/or theft of property lost, stolen or mislaid by mistake, he may be more than willing to refund your money.

BTW-he doesn't have to "Know" the property was lost/stolen to be charged. He can deny it all day and still be charged.

Thanks for all who replied. I called Amazon again and they sent me an email with an ID of the stolen Kindle. They said I should take it to the police for action. I emailed the person I purchased it from and he finally decided to give 150.00 of my original 180.00. He said I could keep the leather case. So now I've learned my lesson and will go to Amazon and order it the right way. I'm just glad to get most of my money back.

Thanks again. You post gave me the strength to be a little more forward than before!

Great. Are you still going to alert the police? You should.

I agree. He is stealing $30 from you and getting away with it by "selling" you a stolen leather case.

If you felt bad about the Kindle, just remember that he stole THAT, too.

If you don't turn him in, he'll just do it again. He made $30 from nothing.

Kindles are linked to a specific Kindle account. They can't be used by anyone except the person who registered it. You are dealing with at least someone who is receiving stolen goods. You should report him. Otherwise, you may be his next victim.
