HELP - Head Lice

I used tweezers to pull the nits off..you must do this every day without fail...if you miss one, you will have them again...I was lucky..I found my DD had them right after they hatched so the RID killed the new hatched. She only had 2 adults on her..very weird..but we only had the one outbreak and only her.

Be VERY CAREFUL with the liberal use of RID...after I washed her hair with it...I found some very scary information about the chemicals in it..

We did not lock up the stuffed animals..they cannotsurvive without human blood, so they don't survive on them.

GOOD LUCK!

This thread is so informative!! My children's grammar school is going through this now. The nurse is checking the kids' heads daily now. So far, my kids don't have it, but my dd has to wear braids to school everyday (she has very long hair). After reading this thread, I'm going to spray the kids' hair everyday with hair spray before sending them off to school.

There is a girl in dd's class that has been sent home repeatedly for the lice. Well, dd invited this girl to her sleepover party next week!!!! I'm not sure what to do about this. I'm hoping the parent wouldn't send this girl to the sleepover if she still has lice, but you just can't depend on other parents to do the right thing any longer.

OK, so besides putting dd's hair in braids and spraying it with hair spray every day before school...what else can I do to prevent her from getting lice?

I've done the mayo wrap with my daughter (her hair needs the deep conditioning, anyway!) and then the rinse with vinegar. Since her hair is long and extremely thick, I make her go through her hair, after I've done it and am satisfied there is nothing there, everyday for 2 weeks and then she has to do it once a week ALL THE TIME. I figure the other parents aren't as diligent, so I'd rather catch a reinfestation right away. My 13YO also washes her hair with Denorex, and nothing since she started that. For my llittle ones, I use the Aussie detangler because it has tea tree oil in it. My 4YO needs the detangler, anyway!

I am the OP and was surprised to find this thread back since it was a year old! Well we were very lucky. Never had a second outbreak and we were lucky to be able to get rid of everything on the first try. I learned my lesson though and both dds (who have long hair) wear their hair in braids, buns or pony tails every day to school, I do use light (AG) hair spray on them every day and am ALWAYS checking!

Good luck to anyone who has to deal with this. I thought I was going to have a breakdown when it happened to us!

Ugh... one more reason I'm not looking forward to sending my DD off to school! I'm a clean freak but this just goes to show that it doesn't matter how clean you are. Lice can happen to anyone!

We went through this last year.
Try Fairy Tales Hair Care
The Rosemary repel line works great.
My daughter used again this year when school started-
we found only 1 dead lice this year!

Good luck

We just went thru this the week before Thanksgiving.

My dd, 5 in Kindergarten itched her head one am just as I was starting to brush it. I didn't think anything of it until my dh said she woke up at 1:30am & said her head was itchy.

So being a nurse I looked & found a few nits & 1 critter. I told my dh she wasn't going to school today & he wasn't going to work since I knew a great deal of washing needed to be done & since I have a 3 yo & a 8 mo old at the time (she is now 9 mo old), I wasn't going to get alot of stuff done.

My dh told me he would of never thought to look.

Luckily I caught it early & I'd say I found less then 15 live ones (and I think that is a high number) from that Wed until the Friday after Thanksgiving but numerous nits.

I did call the school nurse & she called & thanked me for reporting it because she said alot of people don't report it but I want the buggers gone so I wanted all the kids checked. The nurse told me it was also up in 5th grade & one other kid was out with it that day (who knows how many kids had it that were in school & didn't know about it).

Then a week later I went into my dd's classroom & one of the teachers helpers told me that it came from a day care type setting & it spread from a 5th grader to his/her sibling in K.

I have been trying to remind my dd not to hug the girls anymore. One of her best friends keeps hugging her & I tell my dd not to do it & I think her best friend is upset about it but I don't care.

I am glad it is over but I do have to check dd's hair this week, maybe tomorrow when I get home from work.

I was suprised also that this thread came back. I had posted on this in Aug. '05. Thankfully, my DD now 10 hasn't had a recurrence.
