My 11 year old daughter has been interested in playing volleyball for some time now. I've finally gotten around to checking out what's available on the internet.

I'm soooo confused!! There are clubs, house teams, travel teams, YMCA, and park district volleyball.

The clubs seem nice but I get the feeling that they're expensive. Some of them seem to list alot of out of state tournaments too.

I've sent an e-mail to a local lady in charge of one of the clubs. I found on her website that she lives nearby and I'm hoping she can give me some guidance as to what to choose.

However, then I remembered that the people here know everything so I thought I'd ask if any of you have experience with getting a young girl involved in a volleyball team.

What do you choose? How can you find out what's available? Is this sport seasonal? Maybe I'm too late already.

Please help if you have the information.

Thanks!

Yay! Volleyball! My specialty! Ok, I myself play club volleyball and yes, they are very expensive depending on the level. National teams are like $1,000+. But, if you want her to play on like a regional/local team, they aren't as much but these teams still aren't cheap. Um, if shes only 11, I would suggest having her go through camps, training, or play for her school(if possible). Not saying she's not good or anything, but if she's new to the sport, she will get a rude awakening. Some of the girls on the club teams have played since they were 7. Some even younger. But if her school has a team her age level, I would suggest having her try that. Or look into camps or private lessons or something along these lines. But, your her mother and you do what you think is best for her! Whatever you and your daughter choose, good luck to the both of ya! :thumbsup2 Hope I helped! Lots of luck!

EDIT:as for traveling, again, the level of team she's on depends on how much/little traveling you do. if she's on the local teams, they usually don't travel more than 2 hours from home. but if she's on national, then you could go anywhere from chicago, to denver, to salt lake city, and many more places. but usually, traveling isn't a big deal. ~*VQ07*~

Don't know how much I can help but just wanted to say, that I also love volleyball....I have been playing since junior high (yeah, that's a looooong time) it is not seasonal here in Pa...there is always a league to join

Wow, I'm really surprised that there are girls who could have been playing since they were 7. I'm having such a hard time finding a place for her to even learn the sport.

She has only had volleyball during phys ed at school and they do not have a team. I wish they did.

I'll look into a camp. Lessons would be fine but she's looking for a team atmosphere. Maybe lessons could come later if she ends up liking it enough.

Around here they have teams through the park and rec department and traveling club teams. For her first experience I would sign her up for an in-house, non-traveling team to see if she really likes it or not. In our old town the junior Olympic teams were very popular and very expensive. They were good so they almost always went to nationals and it would cost in the $3000 range each year for the older teams, 12 and up or so.

That's probably regional. My niece started this year at 13 and scores about 1/3 of her team's points.

Check with the local YMCA if there is one. The town near us offers a volleyball class for K -6th I believe. Our school starts offering volleyball in 4th or 5th grade. Generally volleyball for school is a fall sport, but like Golfgal stated the Junior Olympic leagues go at different times of the year.

I also love the sport, and play on a league as an adult.

My DD wants to play volleyball as well. She is 10 and there is nothing in our area that I can find until she get to middle school (which will be next fall) I hope they have opportunities for the 6th graders to play in the fall, but I am not sure that they do.

It depends on what western suburb you are located in. The YMCA in Downers Grove has a good volleyball class and has a couple of different levels. My daughter did that for a while and it is really good. She has also played with the DYC. (Darien Youth Club) If you google the name you will see that they are a private club that has many sports programs. They are fun, like a rec league and they teach the kids as well as having games. She has had a lot of fun doing this and they recently had sign-ups for the season that starts soon. There might be something available still. Most people in this league are from Darien, Downers, Woodridge, Clarendon Hills, etc.

Hopefully you can find something that is close to you. It's a really fun sport!!

Check w/ your local high school. I talked to our JV and Varsity coaches tonight and the JV coach had just gotten some info on a VB clinic for 5-7 graders in December and the Varsity coach said there will be one at the school in the summer. DD is excited! :sunny:
