Help! Friendship quilt...

I posted this on the CB but thought I'd get some good responses here!
Got a quilt block to paint on, embroider, or somehow attach a "token of rememberance" to it. It's going to be made into a quilt for a bride and groom. The bride is my dh's much younger 2nd cousin, I think. My FIL and the bride's father are 1st cousins. Anyway, we haven't seen this girl in at least 8 years, she never really talked to us then because we were so much older. We don't HAVE a connection other than a shared last name, which she is about to change.
What should I do? I can't paint but I could cross stitch something. Have any of you participated in something like this and what did you do?

I did this once for a boy who was rec'*** services through early intervention. The dad wanted to make him a quilt with something hand made by each of the people in his son's life who were helping him...
I am not the most creative person. But I do paint theorems and I took one of my stencils and and used the oil paint and then set it with a hot iron. It was cute I did a picture of the lion and the lambs.
Does your family have a home town? where most were originally from? Or return to for family reunions? You could stencil the state on it?
Or maybe cross stitch the family last name and her last name with the wedding date? Or maybe the hubbies favorite team? Or if you are really good at cross stitching and can creat your own patters you could do just important facts at the time of their marriage...you who the president was, favorite bands, cost of bread? silly but 50 years from now would be cute to see!
