Help! Friendship quilt...

Got a quilt block to paint on, embroider, or somehow attach a "token of rememberance" to it. It's going to be made into a quilt for a bride and groom. The bride is my dh's much younger 2nd cousin, I think. My FIL and the bride's father are 1st cousins. Anyway, we haven't seen this girl in at least 8 years, she never really talked to us then because we were so much older. We don't HAVE a connection other than a shared last name, which she is about to change.
What should I do? I can't paint but I could cross stitch something. Have any of you participated in something like this and what did you do?

Thats exactly what I am doing..

I am using a fabric marker to write my letters and then using cross stitch thread and threading over them.
