Help for Overnight drives

I tip I learned from my father-in-law who used to do long drives regularly:

- Pick up a big bag of sunflower seeds (the kind still in the shell) and eat them. Having to constantly pick them up one at a time and splitting them open keeps you from getting tired from the monotony of driving. I'm not a good night-time driver, but when I do this I can really stay alert a lot longer.

Also load up your iPod with tons of episodes of Disney podcasts to listen to.

I love sunflower seeds. I will make sure to pick up some before we go.

When we were younger we drove through the night. I now find I prefer no more than 6-7 hours drive at a time with a stop for the night.

When we drove through the night I made sure to get at least a bit of sleep shortly before. I had a rule to never ever push the limit and drive while sleepy. If that happened I'd pull into the nearest rest stop, restaurant etc, get a cup of coffee and crash for 30 mins. Thats all I needed to be good to go for several more hours. We also did not plan to do much of anything the afternoon of our arrival. Everyone would be too tired. We'd just go to the hotel pool and have dinner and call it a night ready to go the next day.

With an erratic sleep schedule, staying awake all night is fairly easy for me. When we travel on vacations, we tend to travel thru the night. For Disney trips, we tend to leave our home at 1 A.M. and drive thru the night. Staying awake isn't an issue for me during the day after all night driving. I actually do the sunflowers seeds a lot. Also Mountain Dew in sips. My wife loves the fact that I enjoy long road trips and don't mind doing all the driving myself. Our kids also enjoy traveling at night more so than daytime due to time goes by faster when they sleep.

We try to plan our trip when DH is coming off working nights. Our August trip will follow this plan. He's working nights Tues, Weds, Thurs and of course he sleeps during the day. On Friday, after he wakes up (early afternoon) we are going to get on the road. Since he's coming off nights, staying awake all night has become the norm for him. About 6 in the morning, he'll need to sleep, and I'll take over the driving because I will have slept all night.

During our last drive which was 19 hours straight. I bought some of my favorite T.V sitcoms on DVD and hooked the portable DVD player into the cars stero system. The dialogue keeped me entertained with no need to ever see the picture. Some show have such get dialogue you do not need the picture. Made the night go some much faster.

This year I bought move sitcoms and the last Harry Potter on audio CD. Looking forward to the drive.

where would I download this?? what sitcoms are entertaining enough to keep you awake?? I like comedy where as my hubby likes talk radio....zzzzzzzzzzzz...lol

I tried to find some place to download them but could not find any. I bought the DVD's. For me I liked the BIG BANG THEORY, THE OFFICE , KING OF QUEENS and 2 1/2 MEN.

I need comedy to keep me awake. I have thought of buying some of the BEST OF stuff from morning radio shows too. I like BOB and SHERI.

Hope you find something you like..
