My 20DD is going to Germany today and I was wondering if you could share some flight tips for her 10hr flight?

DH and I have never flown international so don't have any advice for her.

I am thinking a banket maybe? Food?

She will have all money, meds, and important items with her.

She is checking her main bag and will have a purse and a backpack. She has an ipod and has to carry her laptop with her. Any advice?

Thanks!

A really good book or two and loose-fitting, comfortable clothing are a MUST for me on long flights!!

I have taken many transatlantic flights from London to the USA, blankets and food have always been provided. I take a good book, load some songs onto my ipod and usually watch a movie or 2. I always make a point of getting up and walking around the aeroplane a few times too just so that my legs don't ache too much from sitting still for that length of time.

yes, getting up a few times and walking around is a must, as i know blood clots are a risk from sitting for a long period of time, she may want to pack some snacks, but meals will be provided, as well as pillow and blanket are provided also. make sure she has made copies of her passport and ID just in case they get lost, make several copies and place one inside the suitcase, in her laptop bag, backpack, etc.

Most overseas flights have TV's in the back of the headrest in front of you. She'll be able to spend a lot of time watching movies, TV shows, playing games, etc.

Keep a full change of clothes with her in her carryon. I've taken a full sleeve of saltine crackers as a precaution in case I get any motion sickness. Also kept all medications with me as well.

Book(s) and I-pods are a must.

I always take a big scarf. Food will be adequate on the plane, there's always crackers and fruit supplied.

Advice? Accept that it will suck. Acceptance makes it a lot easier to get on with.

Almost all trans-Atlantic airlines provide personal entertainment systems. She will just have to be prepared to watch a lot of Monk.

It'll probably be a night-flight so she should try to sleep.

Don't take too much stuff in your hand luggage. Take only what you NEED. It's a pain for everyone if you're trying to rifle through a huge bag to find a sweater etc. I carry just my purse which I can put under the seat - with all important documents, iPod, book and wallet.

Re: copies of documents: DON'T bother. Just email them to yourself. Otherwise you have to worry about the copies, too.

Most international flights will have power outlets under your seat, so you can charge your iPod, portable dvd, or computer! There will also be a variety of music available and movies/games ect to watch/play at each seat. I always bring my own travel pillow/blanket, but the airlines will also provide these. She may want to bring earplugs (or her iPod will work too!) and eye mask for sleeping. (earplugs because on my last flight home from Germany, there was a screaming crying child 2 rows in front of me from the time we left til the time we landed ~ made for a extremely LONG flight) She can always bring a few of her favorite snacks, but she will be fed well on the plane!!

Hope your daughter has an amazing trip!!!

On long flights I bring:
~some kind of wrap (shawl) to use as a wrap or a blanket or, rolled up, as a pillow
~magazines
~word search puzzles
~some filling snacks like granola bars/fiber bars (I like FiberOne or Balance personally)
~pens, highlighters, markers
~a small notebook so I can jot down notes if I think of something as I am flying along
~I never wear socks when flying...my feet get puffy and I hate that sock line that you get around your ankles
~comfortable clothing
~pain reliever...one gets stiff with all that sitting...I like Advil
~she should get up and walk around the plane occasionally

This post is confusingly similar to the post linked to above, even down to the misspelling of blanket. Was that on purpose?

Am I in the twilight zone? New poster shows up just to post a copy cat thread??

What is up??

THE MYSTERY MACHINES thread from earlier today:

"My 19yodd is going to China today and I was wondering if you could share some flight tips for her 16hr flight?

DH and I have never flown international so don't have any advice for her.

I am thinking a pillow/banket maybe? Food? She has an eyemask so she can sleep.

She is checking her main bag and will have a purse and a backpack. Can she bring in food, snacks and what about drinks? Can she bring them if they are not opened?"

This is just bizarre.
