I want to thank everyone who helped with my DS screwy math homework! Like some of the posters figured out, there was a problem on the work sheet. The teacher wasn't aware until I went to speak with her this afternoon. I told her I was cursing her this weekend. I probably would have been okay with the last ones if I hadn't been so frustrated with the wrong one.
Anyway, again, thanks for all of the help! DS now understands all of the problems and the key words to work them out!

My DS has a worksheet of extra credit math and we are struggling! If anyone can help with any of these, I will be your best friend!!! :teeth:

The worksheet is called "Lucky 7"

1. Write a number sentence that has a product of 58,829, using six 7's and no other digits. ETA - I believe there may be a problem with this problem. DS will check with teacher in the morning.

2. Write a number sentence that has a difference of 700, using five 7's and no other digits.

3. Write a number sentence that has a quotient of 101, using six 7's and no other digits.

4. How many numbers between 1 and 1,000 can be divided by 7 without a remainder?

Thanks in advance!

I can help with some of them

1. Well I can get close with 5 7's 777x77=59829, but I know in math close dosen't count!
2. 777-77=700
3. 777/77=101 (oops, 5 again!)
4. There are 14 from 1-100, but I'm not bright enough to extend it to 1000!

2) Difference means subtraction, so 777 - 77 = 700

4) 142
1000/7 = 142 Remainder of 6, so 1 * 7 = 7, 2 * 7 = 14, etc. up to 142 * 7 = 994

I'm still working on the others.

Are you going to take the answers that you get from DISers and let your son turn it in as if he did it?

1) If the answer to number 1 is supposed to be 598,829 then using 6 7s I get:
77 * 7777 = 598,829

3) 7777 / 77 = 101

If mom knows the answers she can guide him :)

He needs to practice and play with the numbers to yield the answer. If we provide her the answer..she can at least know if he's close.

1) I can't get 58,829. Is the product 598,829? If so then (7777)(77) = 598,829.

2) 777 - 77 = 700

3) 7777/77 = 101

4) I will not do the actual count but just add 7s. here is the start - 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84, 91, 98, 105 .....

So a hint for your son--he's got the digits...with all these answers..you now know that there is only one--gosh can't think of the term--so only one add, subract multiply or divide.

As for the last one--he just needs to figure out the largest math equation * 7 that is less than 1000 and then he has his answer.

1000/7 = 142.8571....7*142 = 994 (the largest divisible by seven)---and if his teacher wants him to do 142 math problems additional...he'll know what numbers they are ;) (ETA: so 7*141, 7*140, 7* 139...and so on and so forth)

Well, that sounds reasonable if that's what the plan is :)

^^^ Yeah, that's what my math teacher did earlier in September. She reviewed with us adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions with worksheets and later on in that period, she gave the answers so we can check if our stratagies are right and see how close our answer is before we finished our worksheets so we could check our answers.

That is absolutely the plan, but if I can't get it, then I can't help. I have spent about an hour on excel playing with numbers and am at wits end! He was able to do three other problems by himself. These are extra credit problems, so they aren't even working on this stuff in class.

There's gotta be a digit missing on that 1st one
That's what I keep thinking! I am going to have him write a note explaining that we don't think it is possible. When we get her answer tomorrow, I promise to post her response!

Hi -- I have the answers to the 2nd and the 4th. I'm still working on the other two!

2. 777-77= 700

4. There are 142 numbers evenly divisible by 7 between 1 and 1000. (I made an Excel spreadsheet with the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. in column A and A1 * 7 in column B. Just do a "fill down" from there.)

Our dinner is ready so I'll finish the other two after dinner and get back to you.

If you're looking to help DS, then tell him that on (1) product means he needs to multiply, on (2) difference means he needs to subtract, and on (4) quotient means he needs to divide.

I hope I didn't sound too forward with my question..... it's just that I have heard teachers who were so frustrated because it was obvious that the parents were doing their kid's homework for them and the kids weren't benefitting (sp?) from it in the long run.

No offense taken. As parent, I get frustrated when, they send home work with no instruction, this was a worksheet not from the textbook, so there was no place to look up how to do these problems. I appreciate your concern, believe it or not, I am a teacher, luckily I work with Pre-K and Kindergarten!!! :goodvibes
