HELP..fear of flying..phobia!!!

I forgot to add a couple of other things I do. As soon as we book and I know our flight numbers, I track the flight as often as I can on www.trip.com. I see how high it flies, which cities/airports the flight path goes over, and how fast it generally goes. It also gives me a good idea of how often it is on time. Watching the SAME flight I am going to take arrive in Orlando night after night is really reassuring!!

There are also radar sights for different airports. There is one for the NH/Mass Logan airport area, and you can see all the planes within 90 miles of Logan at any given time, and in real-time. It is neat to see how air traffic control lines them all up... it really is organized and neat to see.

DURING the flight, we try to watch a DVD on my laptop. The headphones really help, and there's nothing like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" to take your mind off of flying.

Thanks for all the suggestions. :) Keep 'em coming!!! I did go ahead and book the flights (yikes!!!!)...I told my husband if I can't bring myself to get on the plane, that he could go with my son. I got a GREAT rate of $173 to fly round trip from Chicago to Orange County, California that I just couldn't pass up. I even looked into taking the train out there...two nights there and two nights back, at a cost of $1,150 for two people....when I called to book the flights, there were NO aisle seats left...I HOPE I can get an aisle seat when I go to the airport...I can't deal with the even-more enclosed feeling of not having an aisle seat! My palms are sweating just as I am typing this, thinking about flying! YUK!!!

Wow, Donna, what a great price!!! Lots of good tips here, I like that www.fearofflyinghelp.com site, looks like a lot of good info there and that www.trip.com site looks great too. As for the seating, check back to the seating site of the airline several times before your trip to see if you can move your seat. Many times you can. Short of that, get there early and ask at the checkin for a seat reassignment. I really need the exit row for my legs (even on Midwest) and they never assign them ahead of time. I get there early and as soon as the counter is open (or now I guess at the check-in counter) I ask for and always get the exit row.

Good luck, Donna, enjoy your flight. {hugs}

I dont think xanax is an option because we arrive at 9:30 am! If I take that early in the AM, my day will be shot. Im also not good with medications- my stomach doesnt handle it well.

You should always try a new med BEFORE you fly. A doctor told me that. You may find that you will be OK for the day. It does wear off after a time.
