HELP!!! Evolution essay help needed. Not a debate please.

Yeah, but there's a formula, isn't there, for scientifically "proving" a theory? (It's been awhile since I've thought about this; forgive me if I'm off)

Outside of mathematics, not that I really know of. Most all the science I'm familiar with, and the way they try to teach us to do it is to figure out 2 alternative reasons (A and B) that can explain what you observe, and then figure out an experiment to rule out one of them. But that doesn't mean the remaining theory is "true", but rather just "consistent."

But, that will never be helpful for evolution vs. creation theory. All available data in biology is *consistent* with the theory of evolution. But, anyone can also say that an all powerful being placed all the data on this planet to be consistent with evolution, and yet did create the world (and all the signs of evolution) in 6 days. And there is nothing in science that can "disprove" that.

(I'm a biologist, and not religious. I try to keep an open mind, but still think that religious beliefs and faith should be kept in the church.)

I basically agree with everyone else.

1. Do you think that evolution should be taught in schools?

Absolutely.

2. If yes, why? If not, why?

Evolution is the scientific explanation of how life came to be and developed to where it is today.

3. Also do you think that religion should be taught as a theory along with evolution?

Creationism and intelligent design certainly don't belong in public school science curriculums since they are not scientific subjects. I do agree with the concept of teaching comparative religion classes. In fact, I think doing so would foster religious tolerance. That would be the acceptable place for mentioning creationism.

Humans have a natural desire to know how we got here.
No, but students should be told there are other theories/beliefs as to how we got here, religious & otherwise. It should be left at that.

2. It is as close to a proven as you can have regarding the creation of life on earth.

3. No. Matters of religious belief and religious faith belong in a.) Houses of Worship or if in school b.) classes on the teachings of different religions. Also, "creationism" and "Intelligent design" are "back door" efforts to push Christianity into the science classroom. It does not belong there & pre-supposes a Christian belief & no others. Why not teach the Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish stories of creation? Because the "Christian Right" does not want it there. (& BTW, I am a conservative republican Christian, but I do Not include myself in "That group").

I wanted to thank all of you who helped me out with this project. My small circle of family and friends all have such strong feelings about this subject that when I asked them, I found myself in the middle of a debate. A men of science and men of faith debate can really bring down a BBQ! So again thank you, it's one less thing to worry about during this insane fianls week.
