I'm taking my ECV on Southwest for the first time. The airline website says I can take one carry on bag and one personal item

I know I should not leave the basket on my ECV when I gate check the ECV and I have read it's best to put it in the carry on. However, we're packing as I write this and it won't fit.

Can I carry the basket as my personal item?

Thanks

In general, airlines have exceptions for medical items. Can you call the airline and find out?

There is no in general about it medical equipment and pieces there of ARE an exception and do not count against your carry on limits. That is the law.

I answered this same question on the Transportation Board, but here's my answer again:
any pieces of your mobility device do not count toward either your baggage or carry on allowance. That is not an airline policy; it's a policy of the Air Carrier's Act (the airline equivilent of the ADA).
I take the seat, back, headrest and armrests off of my DD's wheelchair. I used to take off her footrests too, but they are not removable on her newer manual wheelchair. no one bats an eye as I put them into either the closet or the overhead bin.

When I flew with mine, I removed the basket and put it in a handled shopping bag I had put in my bag for that purpose. I was able to put my purse down inside it to make my things easier to carry too as I had my CPap with me as my carryon and DH had our other bag. I put it in the overhead and had no problem at all.
