I am just back from Florida. I went on the DVC tour at Saratoga on my last day. I was really interested in purchasing there or at AKL but found out Disney cannot sell in the Republic of Ireland OR call me or email me -against the law here. If i wanted to purchase, i had to sign there and then (without my husband)-I wouldn't do it-even with a 10 day 'cooling off' period.

I talked to my mum (who was with me) and asked if she could buy(she lives in the UK)- (i'd finance it) and thereafter, she could transfer ownership to me.

I was told this was possible.

I know Disney will pick up most of the costs for mums ownership (fee approx $350)BUT I'm worried about costs of 'transfer' to me thereafter (no finance involved)and whether or not its legal??

I see some posts about 'disney' approving sales/re-sales etc, so it appears re-sales are possible to Repub of Ireland but as there will be no exchange of money between mum and I,not sure if we can do this .

Anyone done this ie transferred from UK to Eire WITHOUT any money exchange-i suppose its a 'gift' for tax purposes?

Other alternative is that i purchase a re-sale. If i do this, anyone know costs involved? can anyone recommend a good lawyer and good website to buy and has anyone in Republic of Ireland done this before???

I must still be on american timeclock-just noticed its 3am here

thanks a bunch

Hello Lam-

You may want to check out buying resale- I know that resellers can sell to any US state (even the ones that Disney can't sell to). I'm not 100% sure that there aren't issues with purchasing internationally, but it may be worth looking into to save the hassle of having to do a transfer. I purchased my contract resale through the Timeshare Store (this boards sponsor), and was very happy with the service I received.

Good Luck!

How about another short trip to WDW so that you can sort the matter out in person?

My DH and I did a weekend trip from England in December and it was fabulous.

I looked into buying DVC resale, but I found it a little daunting from overseas, so stuck with buying direct.

Buying in your parents' name then transferring to yourselves sounds like a bit of a fiddle too.

For you, the best option is to buy direct. This would be the simplest and easiest transaction

Second, buy resale. You can buy from home, takes a bit more time and have to pass ROFR. Cost are pretty reasonable and you can probably find a contract that will work for you.

Third, have your mom buy and tranfer to you. This will work, but cost the most becuase of transfer fees and then taxes.

I live in Saskatchewan, Canada, and it was the same thing with me, Disney is not allowed to even talk to me about DVC while I'm at home.

I'm in the process of buying a resale contract thru the Timeshare Store and haven't found any difficulties with it. If you contact someone there (you could even do it thru e-mail) they'll be able to tell you if there's any complications with you living in the Rebublic of Ireland or not. From what I understood, when you buy resale, the laws stopping Disney from selling to you directly don't apply as the Timeshare Store is not an the actual timeshare, but a middle man from which you are buying a real estate intrest from. Funny how the law works huh?

Hi,

Did you post on the UK boards as well? They have a DVC section. You might find someone who was in the exact same position.

All the best,

Lisa

Hi lam :yay:

Would there be any chance of you and DS going over there for a week at Halloween? That way you could set it all up before you go and get AKL which I know you really want :goodvibes

Thank you all for your replies.

Tinktatoo-no chance of Halloween as DH going spare that i left him on his own for 2 weeks !!

Offer on the table is to do a joint purchase with mum using her uk address and the more I think of it, the more uncomfortable i feel about this so

may do re-sale option but imagine AKL will be hard to get!!

will check with UK DVC member site as suggested to see if anyone else has transferred ownership and whats involved(thanks for advice)

Hi lam,

I've done a lot of thinking and talking and analysing of DVC over the last 18 months. As you already know you cannot buy from Disney directly (unless you go over there again) but you definitely can buy a resale contract through a company like The Timeshare Store. I contacted them about a year ago and they confirmed that there would be no problem legally or otherwise. They were really very helpful with my queries. I truly feel this is the best way to go and if I were you, I think it would be much more straightforward than doing the title transfer thing with your mom. Keep an eye on the resale listings - if you go to the Timeshore Store's website you can sign up to receive their daily listings by email. We're hoping to finally take the plunge later this year (can't say I haven't thought it through :lmao: ). After all, once you're in the dvc system it doesn't matter whether you initially purchased through Disney direct or through a resale company.

Oh, regarding AKV, there are already resale contracts out there - 4 different ones on The Timeshare Store's lists right now. Don't know how much competition there would be for purchasing those but they're out there!

Good luck!
Deb

Just a thought but, how far is Northern Ireland from you? Could you get a PO box there and use it as your address? It should be the same as buying in the UK but be in your name. Then do a address change. Does this make sense??

What a good idea Sean-hadn't even thought of that one!!

In the end, i think we may plump for a re-sale although my heart is with AKV, don't think my 'budget' can stretch that far to justify the extra costs involved pr point!!

I would have 'stretched' a bit more if i was certain my other half would come to Disney with son and I
but looks like us two plus mum!! so different considerations to take into account!
