Help driving from PA

DW and I will be starting our first long distance road trip on 9-18 from Allentown, PA to WDW. As of right now we are planning on leaving Allentwon around 5:00am Saturday. We will both be taking turns driving. Our first plan is to stop over in Hilton head over night Saturday and continue to WDW early Sunday morning.

What we are looking for is advice on our plan and any suggestions as to where to stay overnight. We are really looking forward to this trip and could really use the advice.

Otherwise, I'm not sure you'd want to go off course? Our second day, we'll be leaving from Erie, and will probably stop around St. George, SC. We figure that will put us in WDW around 2 or 3. Of course, we'll be going in winter, and will stop at a little carwash we know in Jacksonville on the way so our car (Bella, yes we named our car) will be nice and clean on vacation.

If you're leaving at 5 in the morning, you might want to press on into GA, since you could be there before 7 pm, even with breaks (according to the CAA website,and our experience). That would put you in WDW with plenty of time to check in, even assuming you sleep in a bit later than we might while road tripping.

We made the drive in April. The drive down, we left at the worst possible time, but couldn't wait any longer. Left at 4pm on a Friday We did hit some traffic in Philadelphia, Delaware, but nothing much in DC but there was some construction in Virginia. No big deal. We actually drove straight thru, I slept more than my DH did. It really was not bad at all, we checked into our resort at 10:30am and thankfully a room was ready so we could shower and we actually were on our way.

The ride home...well, it was dreadful Thankfully, we had a lot of great things to talk about, as our trip was wonderful. We did stop on the way home in NC, I can not remember the town we were in, but it was pretty terrible. That said, we never really got our groove going home. It seemed like we were stopping every hour or so, and it was just exhausting.

My DS was awesome in the car, the only one that threw a real tantrum would be me I was just spent, and wanted to get home so bad LOL. We had a TV with DVD player, Leapster, books, markers, crayons and all sorts of goodies.

Something that was WONDERFUL for us was the 1-95 Guide. It gives a description of every exit on 95, hotels, gas, food, shopping, etc. It was super. Check out www.usastar.com. I am not sure you would receive it in time for your trip, but definately worth if you plan to drive again.

Thank you all for the great advice. We have decided to leave either very early saturday morning like 3 or 4 in the mornining and if that does not work we will with out a doubt be on the road by 5am. We also have a room booked in savana, ga at a clarion did'nt look to bad from the web site. My DW got it from a post on this site. Thanks again. And everybody have a save and wounderful trip.

Heading out at midnight Saturday or I guess you could say Sunday. Driving straight through and hoping to get to Disney by late afternoon.

Only thing I am worried about is the rain that is forecasted for most of the states we will be driving through on Sunday. DH and I hate driving in the rain as do most people.

This is our 1st drive down w/ the kids (3 1/2, 8 and 12) plus our nephew (18) and depending on how it goes could be the last.

Hopefully TS Jeanne will stay away from Florida next week. We're hoping for a relaxing week poolside at Saratoga Springs Resort.

If you have an annual pass -- Disney's Hilton Head Resort has two-bedroom villas for $99.00 per night -- if not, Expedia has great rates at the same resort.

We've driven this route many times from Holland, PA (approx. 45 minutes north of Phila.) and we always stop in Hilton Head. It's a 12 hr. drive for us. Then in the a.m. we head to WDW -- approx. 5 hrs.

This way you can enjoy Disney on the way down, in anticipation of your trip.
