Help...D80 died..

I know this is the place to get some suggestions/answers and thank you ALL in advance!!

On Saturday I was shooting a girls playoff basketball game and my D80...totally DIED..no displays at all.

I always shoot in continuous mode, battery full and had no idea why. Took out the battery and reseeded it and still naddddaaa. OK guess next week I'll go to the camera doctor..

An hour ago I replaced the battery with another...and...Its working now?? Took a couple shots to be sure.
OK...put the original battery back..and it also works.

I have an upcoming vacation and will be gone for a month (out of the country) and definitely planned on taking my camera gear..SO..

..Do I ignore this glitch?? What might be the problem? Does it need maybe its first cleaning?? Its about 5/6 yrs. old.
What would YOU do ??? HELP !! Any suggestions appreciated..

OK here is the obvious question......is it possible the original battery just needs to be recharged? Batteries, especially those not made by the OEM, tend to lose effectiveness after a few years.

The battery life indicated more than 3/4 full, though I hadn't used it since Oct last year, and yes, it was left in the camera. Its a DB-ENEL3E and compatable for the nikon.
Could it maybe have discharged and not displayed??

Even when the camera is off it is still using battery power. If you hadn't used it since October, then you very well may have drained it dry. Thats why if your going to not use the camera for long periods of time you take the battery out.

I'm not saying that IS what happened, just that it is a very good possibility.

It can't hurt to recharge that battery and see how it works. Hopefully it is something just that simple

If you were planning to upgrade, Now would be the perfect exc... REASON.

As long as it works you can get some resale value towards a new one that will give you peace of mind on your nice vakay. I recently sold my Canon 20D(I had since 2004), it went for more than I expected... also sold a few old cell phones. I paid like $50 outa pocket for my new camera(should arrive Friday).

Some great cameras have come out in last few years/months.

Hopefully it was just the battery. Keep using it to see if it does it again. I always take my p&s as a back up on vacation, just in case. Of course, if you can afford a new body..........the D80 could be your back up.
I occasionally dream/nightmare that my camera(also a D80) won't take a photo! I keep clicking and clicking the shutter and nothing.... Usually before a trip.
