Help- camera took a swim in the lake!

Does anyone have a cool trick to save a camera that went swimming?? DH and DS just got back from an overnight at a Boy Scout camp about an hour away. They had a great time...ds is super excited..but canoeing apparently didn't go as planned. They tipped their canoe in the middle of the lake.
Thankfully DH managed to have a sense of humor about the whole thing, and they were able to salvage the rest of the night....my camera is another story. DH has a outdoors type cell phone..which is apparently waterproof.. better be for what we paid for it...so that's not a worry.

Anyone think maybe I can save it?? I would rather not have to buy a new one...especially this close to our trip. It's not our nice one..it's older and I was thinking of giving it to ds and getting another for myself, but I'd rather save it right now. Also, dumb me didn't download the memory card before they went...so I would really like to be able to save the card.

Any suggestions????

Never tried this but it can't hurt to try. I read this somewhere else. Take memory card and batteries out of camera and let everything air dry for at least 48 hours, maybe longer. Put everything back to together and try it. Good Luck.

also...rice draws moisture out of wet electronics.

The camera is probably toast but the memory card should be fine. DH dropped his in the ocean once.

You can probably put the memory card into another camera or they do make devices where you can plug in the memory card directly to the computer. Or I think a lot of photo kiosks at stores take memory cards directly so you could at least print out the pics.

The camera is probably toast, the card should be fine. Try putting the camera in a bowl of uncooked rice and leave it for a week. This is one of the only things that sometimes works for electronics. My friends daughter went in a pool with her ipod and this did work for them. It did not work following the incident, however after a week in rice it did. Good luck.

there are several indicators on the camera that show the wet ride it took. I would not chance it as the primary camera even if it started to work a little.

DGS dunked the sons in the toilet and ds thought it was having power issues. The manufacture said don't send it back if there was a chance it was wet as the cost is non refundable if water damage. The warranty did not cover that.

Everyone swore that it did not get wet...until the company called and said that every place the indicators were was alerting a swim....
Finally when asked if the kiddo knew how the camera got wet he went into the bathroom and showed the dip it took

The money could have gone for a new camera had they know what to look for.
The memory card should be fine. Hopefully. Get a back up asap.

I used to work for Panasonic in their warranty repair center. I didn't do repairs but one thing I learned about electronics - if the water was salt forget about the camera it's toast. Absolutely nothing will save it. The salt adheres to the circuits and fries them. Same goes if you get a cut and bleed on it - if the blood seeps into a crack the salt in the blood will fry the circuits - who knew. (DF did this to his laptop.)

You may or may not be able to save the memory card. I had one go thru the washing machine and it worked just fine. It's a different kind of circuitry.
