in less than 24 hours. New town, new computer fix it place. I knew there were problems the minute I got it home. I asked them to find out why MS Word wouldn't open. They assured me that it was fixed but it wasn't. Shortly after that, the machine froze for no apparent reason. Then this morning I wanted to scan it so I d/l Panda Virus protection. Since then I haven't be able to get past the Windows 98 opening screen. I can open it in Safe Mode but that's it. The message I'm getting says Windows did not finish loading and it will start with a minimal amount of drivers.

Needless to say I'm not too happy. I'm willing to give the repair people a break as they had a sudden death in the family. Just wondering if there is any type of easy fix I might do. They won't be back in the store until Monday at the earliest.

I'm totally clueless on how to fix computers so any advice needs to be in one syllable words.

How abot 2 words?

BEST BUY. :cool1:

I'm sorry you are having so much trouble with the repair place. Is your computer fairly new? Maybe in the long run it would be cheaper to replace it.
My dh just bought me this one. I wanted to wait or buy more memory for the older one, but he pointed out that nowadays computers are relatively inexpensive and a new one was the way to go. :flower:

I hope this computer place fixes it right for you on Monday!

Uh, Uh... Well...

I had a windows 98 install do this on me too. I installed Windows 98, then 2 days later it all of a sudden started saying that it hadn't finishined installing. After trying to re-install it 3 times (and I *know* what I'm doing), I wiped the drive, added some memory to the machine and installed XP Home. Windoze 98 problem solved.

Windows 98 is very iffy at this point. Microsoft only releases critical patches for Windows 98 - which could very well leave your machine open to viruses, trojans, etc. Small chance, but since I don't know which sites you go to, I can't say for sure. If you do budget board a lot and go to different sites for deals, then you WILL get a trojan at some time.

I kinda agree with ChristmasElf. I assume you are running Windows 98 because it's on an older computer that you've had for a long time. Best Buy has some emachines (not the best, but not the worst) machines very very inexpensive (< $400). I'd buy the extended warranty. You can even get cheap (ok) machines at Walmart now.
