I was able to find a hotel room for about $40 a night less on Orbitz than on the hotel's website, but I have never booked through them or any of the online companies. Could anyone share their experience with orbitz, or similar online booking companies? Thank you!

Read everything about cancellation policies for your particular hotel. Know exactly IF you can cancel, and if you can, WHEN you have to cancel by. Put that in your calendar/smartphone/whatever, so you know. Know what sort of fee you might incur. Basically, read everything so if something happens you know just what you're looking at in terms of fees, etc.

Since you're on the hotel website, you know if there will be parking or resort fees as well.

Ive used them. it was just ok. slight glitch and my only issue was that i couldn't get anyone on the phone there. ? has that changed?

First check the exact hotel that Orbitz or Travelocity or Expedia, etc. suggested to see if the same rate shows up there too. It is much better to book directly with the hotel because Orbitz, etc. still have a long way to go regarding customer service if something goes even slightly wrong.
