Ugh! We just discovered that DD10 ate caramel on the sofa yesterday, spilled it, left a paper towel on top of the mess and covered it with a sofa cushion so it wouldn't be discovered. She just confessed. Punishment is in her future... but How do we get this hardened paper-towelled encrusted mess off the sofa?!?!?

Any suggestions from you cleaning gurus?

Thanks.
Mary

I can't give you any help, but I'd be interested in hearing how to clean a microfibe sofa too.

It's not coming off now that it's hardened? I was going to suggest icing it to get it hard and then scraping it off. Although it would probably leave a grease stain. I suppose if that won't work then maybe warming it with a blow dryer to get it soft. That wouldn't be my first choice though. Can you call the store where you bought it from and ask them.

I would probably scrap off as much as I can then warm it with a blow dryer to melt it a bit and just keep scraping off as much as I could. Good luck because it sounds like a mess.

dh said just use very warm water use a wet vac or upholstery cleaner don't use blow dyer it will melt into the fabric.and keep going over it.

Not sure if this would work with carmel, but it does with wax.

Lay paper towels over it and rub a warm iron over it, the mess will melt and absorb into the paper towel.

Good Luck!

Hmmmmm....I'm with the warm water, wet/vac route, but I don't really know. I think the problem with using a blow/dryer or a warm iron might be that this could drive the oils/butter/sugar further into the fabric/stuffing.

Maybe call up the store you brought it from. There's got to be a microfiber cleaning website/forum somewhare on the Web.

I like the look of the microfiber-upholstered sofas/chairs, had never thought about how difficult cleaning food stains off of them might be. Update us on how everything turns out.
And good luck.

agnes!

We have a microfiber sofa, and most things magically come right off with plain 'ole water (ballpoint pen, dirt, food stains, etc). For a stuck-on mess like caramel, I'd go with water as warm as you can stand to melt off most of the mess. The wet vac idea sounds great- suck up the mess and dry out the cushoins as you go.

Maybe freeze it like candle wax?

It might lift that way...Good Luck!

Baby wipes. I am telling you those things could clean a car engine. Get one and rub rub rub!!!!

Well, my DH used hot water and it looks prety good now that it is dry, not perfect, but not awful. Luckily, the caramel spilled near the edge of the cushion and side of the couch arm.... so it can be camoflauged by the throw pillows.

Thanks for all the help.

Mary

WD-40.

IT works great getting gum out of kids hair!

but it might stain a little!!pirate:

My DD dropped a Junior Mint on our microfiber sofa, and before I found it, it was smushed in, and hard. I took a dinner knife, and scraped off all I could, then took a wet papertowel to it... all came right off! I only tell you this because the junior mint filling may be pretty close to the caramel. Good luck!
